A lesson in stick

Aug 19, 2005 11:06

So, I must say, the funniest thing EVER is me trying to learn how to drive stick. Yeah, that's right. Me. And it was my idea too, go figure. So this morning my dad and I are out on business and he says, you know why don't you drive the car on the way back home? And I'm like, sure, no problem, it can't be that hard. Ha. This is how that driving lesson went:

Dad: *explains all the workings of manual and such*
Me: *nods obediently*
Dad: Now drive.
Me: Yes, ok.

10 seconds later...

Dad: CLUTCH, CLUTCH. GAS, YOU NEED GAS. CHANGE GEARS!! BRAAAAAAKE, etc.
Me: Clutch??
Car: *dies*

Yeah, the car totally died at a four way stop. All the other cars kept looking at me in my car trying to figure out how to work the clutch and the gas at the same time, and how to shift into 1st instead of getting into neutral, and thinking I was in 1st. Oh, and not to mention I couldn't pull into my driveway for the life of me. We finally figured out I'd managed to shift into 4th gear somehow. And then I shifted into reverse on accident thinking I was in 1st, and whoa why are we going backwards? Dad was very patient with me even as I made a fool out of myself in various trying to turn situations.

I felt like I was 15 again, trying to learn how to drive. Except there was more involved with clutching and breaking and gas and just whoa. No worries though, I'm going to keep practicing until my shifting is flawless. Trouble is, I just kept forgetting which gear I was in, and couldn't really tell just yet. But, towards the end of the lesson my clutching skills were getting pretty good. Coordination on the other hand needs some work. Yeaaah.

In other news, 12 days (OMG) until I go back to school. Can I just say that I am getting super excited? I made a list of all the things I need to do/buy before I go back to school, most importantly clean out my car, because that darling thing is coming with me this year! I'm way excited about that.

Hope everyone is doing well as they go back to school and such. And hopefully you are as excited as me about it too! ♥
