First Love: Hatsukoi

Feb 23, 2023 14:26

A man and a woman retrace their memory of an unforgettable first love. They first met in the 1990's and grew up together in the 2000's.

Yae Noguchi (Hikari Mitsushima) wants to become a flight attendant, but she has an accident. Harumichi Namiki (Takeru Satoh) becomes a pilot for the Japan Air Self-Defense Force. He quits being a pilot and goes the other way. (asiawiki-2022)

I would have probably not watched this drama if it wasn't for Hikari. Not my type of drama for sure, I don't like angsty romances. Surprisingly and in spite of a few cliches, this one was ok, specially because Jdramas do not drag and they almost always make their characters either likeable or sympathetic.

I certainly liked quite a few characters, most specifically, the actors. Young Yae and young Harumichi were so cute <3 truly the embodiment of teenagers in their first love experience, without making it corny nor too saccharine. The actors were both adorable <3

My sweet Mitsushima Hikari was perfect, once again, in an angsty yet vulnerable character. I think Sato Takeru was ok... certainly much better than most of other dramas I watched of him.

The sex scene in ep05 took me by surprise O_O naked breast and everything, what. This is the 1st drama I watched that has nudity... and just have to be on Netflix... now everyone would think Jdramas are racy XD

Although I didn't grow up listening to Utada Hikaru's song, "First Love", I do love the song and every time I listened to it in the drama, it moved me to tears. It is a nostalgic song even for people like me (who grew up listening to Latin songs, not Asian).

Not perfect, and young Harumichi was a sweetheart and I loved him, but older Harumichi was an ass for cheating on his girlfriend (kissing Yae while still being her boyfriend) and breaking up with her says before the wedding. After like, 10 years together. What an ass. Doesn't matter that she knew of his past love, she deserved a bit more of respect.

I loved the JSL. Harumichi's sister is deaf and there were a couple of scenes that made me teary-eyed. I loved her relationship with him; her own love story with her husband, and that Yae learned JSL when younger.

**My rating: 8/10**
