Do you know where your makeup brush has been?

Today at lunch, my friend Jen was telling me about the baby shower she went to for her sister in law at a Bare Escentuals store. She did not want any of the makeup, but she did find a brush she liked and bought it. "One thing they are really good at making is brushes, obviously".

My reply to her was "You know that their brushes are made with squirrel fur, right?"

Apparently she did not, and was quite disturbed by this. The only reason I knew is I have been doing a lot of makeup brush research lately, and I absolutely refuse to purchase a brush that is not synthetic. Killing of shearing an animal so you can put on makeup is ludicrous in my book. In my research, I was surprised at how many makeup companies that claim their cosmetics are "cruelty free" utilize animal products in the making of their brushes. Granted, they don't post "squirrel hair" or "goat hair" on the label, so it is easy to see why so many people are unaware. A safe rule of thumb, if the company does not explicitly state that the brushes are synthetic, go shop somewhere that does.

Aveda, Origins, and Urban Decay are a few companies that do make synthetic brushes in case you are interested. The Aveda and Origins brushes I can tell you firsthand are FABULOUS.
