Hate You - Wish You Were Here With Me (Sam/Dean)
This is mostly just a practice run for my FST formatting. It doesn't have a cover or tracklist page yet, but I might make those when I'm not too lazy. Which means in about ten minutes. But yeah.
Sam/Dean. Sorry, I'm too lazy to upload the songs--and plus two of them are .wma and my crappy dial-up will not allow me to d/l them as .mp3 instead. So if you want the songs, GO GET THEM YOURSELF?
1. Half a World Away - R.E.M
This could be the saddest dusk I’ve ever known
Turn to a miracle, high alive
My mind is racing as it always will
My hands tired, my heart aches
I’m half the world away and go
Dean, dealing with Sam’s leaving and the general distance, tries to deal with everything by just keeping moving. If he just keeps moving, he doesn’t have to admit that anything has changed.
2. We Used to be Friends - The Dandy Warhols
A long time ago, we used to be friends
But I haven’t thought of you lately at all.
If ever again a greeting I send to you
Short and sweet to the soul I intend.
Sam, in Palo Alto, tries to forget the life he led. And how does a college-goer do this? Frat parties and drunk-dialing your older brother.
3. Beautiful Enemy - Dar Williams
My nation’s grand
Your name’s not on any signs.
It’s so well planned
And well groomed and yet sometimes
The past tornadoes through.
So, due to trying to ignore that anything has happened and random drunk-dialing episodes at all hours, the brothers decide to deny the other’s existence. It doesn’t really work.
4. Radio - The Corrs
But you are in my head
Swimming forever in my head
Tangled in my dreams
Swimming forever
Sam, it seems, can’t focus on anything. Mostly because now that he’s not talking to Dean, he wants to talk to Dean.
5. I Remember California - R.E.M
I recall that you were there
Golden smile and shining hair
I recall it wasn’t fair
I recollect it wasn’t fair
Remembering it wasn’t fair outside
Dean, meanwhile, wonders if it’s worth going to California even if it means he’ll start a fight-either with Sam, or with John.
6. 1000 Oceans - Tori Amos
Well, I can’t believe that I would keep
Keep you from flying
And I would cry a thousand more
If that’s what it takes
To sail you home
Sail you home, sail you home
Dean, unable to keep up this not-contact, goes to Palo Alto and tells Sam that he only ever wanted the best. Sam tells him to beat it. They don’t talk for two years, until Dean shows up and tells Sam that John’s missing.
7. P.S. You Rock My World - The Eels
I was at a funeral the day I realized
I wanted to spend my life with you
Sam, after the fire, struggles to get back in the game-and win back the trust he knows he lost when he left.
8. Cool Blue Reason - Cake
Cool blue reason wraps around your throat
The minutes change like seasons
Only eight more hours to go
Back to table of contents
Bad shit happens sometimes. Especially when you’re fighting things that are generally already dead.
9. Satan Is My Motor - Cake
I’ve got brakes
I’m wide awake
I can stop this car at any time
OBLIGITORY IMPALA SONG. Dean loves his baby. Sam, begrudgingly, does as well.
10. If Love Is Not Enough - Peter Mulvey
If love is not enough then what’s enough? I am listening
If love is not enough what keeps the moon bright,
What keeps the ocean glistening?
You think it’s you, I think it’s me
If love is not enough than what else can it be?
Sam and Dean struggle with life, the general situation they’ve gotten themselves trapped in, and what might be love-but please, no chick flick moments.
11. February - Dar Williams
I threw your keys in the water, I looked back
They’d frozen half-way down in the ice.
They froze up so quickly, the keys and their owners,
Even after the anger, it all turned silent, and
Everything turned solitary,
So we came to February.
Fights have a tendency to lead to things we don’t necessarily mean, and generally that means Sam is either beating pavement or threatening to beat pavement.
12. Between - Vienna Teng
We are not together here
Though we lie entwined
To make room for the other presence
We draw back in our minds.
Dean’s not going to talk about it. Because Sam’s the girl in this relationship. But if Sam pulls the ‘I’m leaving’ card one more time, Dean might have to snap.
13. To Be Alone With You - Sufjan Stevens
You gave your body to the lonely
They took your clothes
You gave up a wife and a family
You gave up your goals
But, really, Dean gets it. Really, he does. Sam lost and gave up a lot of stuff. And he appreciates that.
14. Sweetness Follows - R.E.M
Readying to bury your father and your mother
What did you think when you lost another?
So, of course, Sam has to go and get himself shanked in the kidney.
15. Mess - Ben Folds Five
All the untested virtue
Of things I said I’d never do
Least of all to you
And, yeah, maybe it wasn’t Dean’s best idea to go and sell his soul to a Crossroad Demon, but, c’mon. Sam was dead. That’s totally different than beating pavement. He had to do something about it.
16. And So It Goes, as sung by Moxy Fruvous
I spoke to you in cautious tones
You answered me with no pretense
And still I feel I said too much
My silence is my self defense.
And, you know, things don’t really get better from there. Because Dean’s got a year left, and Sam’s snapping under the pressure. This is just a recipe for disaster.
17. Don’t Speak - No Doubt
I really feel that I’m losing my best friend
I can’t believe this could be the end.
It looks as though you’re letting go
And if it’s real, well I don’t want to know.
And while Dean might have already accepted his fate, Sam is still definitely trying to figure this thing out. Because what the hell is he going to do without his brother...
