96 - Writer's Choice - Explantions Explanations
“What's it like?” Basch asks one late summer evening, eyes closed and arms tucked behind his head. Noah watches him more intently than he says he is watching the sunrise. He jumps a little at his twin's words.
“What's what like?”
“Kissing somebody.” Without opening his eyes, Basch gestures at him crudely. “And don't lie and say you don't know. You're easy like that.”
“... It's not like anything. Wanna see?”
Basch doesn't open his eyes, and glows in the setting sun as Noah bends until their lips almost touch. Then, Basch shoves Noah's shoulders and laughs at Noah good naturedly.
24 - Family Family
They were from a distant branch of the main family-their father, Peter, was the named second cousin of the head of the family. Nobody in the main family cared about Basch and Noah's birth. They grew used to ignorance. So it was a surprising thing, when they went to Zuan and Noah enlisted with the Guard, that there was a party held for them.
Standing on the balcony, drunk off malted liquor and listening to Noah sing and laugh to himself on the bed, Basch wondered who these people were and why his father made him call them “family”.
1 - Beginnings Winter
The first kiss is shy and quick and forgettable, the winter they were eleven as they curled in bed to ward off the cold. Noah thinks he's dreamed it: as soon as it's gone, Basch turned away and went to sleep. But his lips burn a little, like he's been shocked after running his stockinged feet over the carpet in the front room and touching the door handle. His eyes burn as he stares into the darkness and wonders what just happened-was Basch sleeping, just rolling over and delivering a parting kiss in his dreams? Or did he mean ...?
2 - Middles Autumn
The second kiss is hot and hungry-the autumn they are thirteen-filled with drunken passion and laughter from Basch as Noah tries to be sexy about the whole thing, writhing and sighing and biting Basch's lips gently. He runs his hands through Noah's short hair as they pull apart, tugging and grinning like an idiot. There are more kisses, more than Noah can count, until they're on the bed and gooseflesh has broken over his skin as Basch moans against his neck and they move against each other.
And just as hands go ghosting over naked skin-
“Basch! Noah!”
3 - Ends Spring
Their last kiss, in the spring they are seventeen, is sweet and tender. Noah laughs, and says it will probably be Basch's last, after his marriage in two years; Basch shoves him, splashes him with the river water and says it will be Noah's last ever.
“We'd best make it good then.”
So they kiss until time doesn't matter and the water seem to freeze against their skin. They only stop when Basch catches the sun through the trees and says Ilare is waiting for him back at home. Noah shakes his head, says Basch loves her more than him.
