Down and Out in Paris and London - George Orwell : 1959
I took an interest in this book almost immediately. You see, for awhile now I've made it a point to, when it is safe, to spend time with someone on the streets. I don't know why I do it, perhaps out of guilt for being white and having means, certainly more means than the homeless I talk with. Whatever the reason, I end up discovering a few things..
1. I am lucky to be alive, and in good means to live in a warm structure.
2. I don't need to con people, just because in the situation, at that moment - it's necessary.
3. I have no idea how I would survive if I were in a position of being homeless.
4. After reading Down and Out.. it would seem not much has really changed where it concerns the treatment of the homeless and the commonalities they share through the decades. Language quirks and idioms, but the meaning remains strong as ever.
So yeah, I really dug this book. Thanks to
