Character name: Rydia Drake
Fandom: Final Fantasy IV
Timeline: Directly after the ending events of Final Fantasy IV (Playstation version), excluding The After canon.
Age: 17
~*Magical*~ abilities and strengths: Rydia is a summoner and a black mage. She can call forth monsters to use their powers to help her. She can also cast numerous black magic spells. Most of them are elemental. These are her strongest attributes.
Physically, she isn't strong at all. She's a little bit on the weak side, but she makes up for it with her magic. She's also capable of using rods, whips, knives, bows and arrows. She's not very good with the bow, though, so she'll mostly stick to whips and knives. The whip is her weapon of choice.
How would they use their abilities?: Occasionally if she's bored she may summon a monster for company or to help her out with something (i.e. find something important that's been lost) but it wouldn't be an overly frequent occurrence. On missions they would be her main source of defense and offense. Her black magic abilities are quite destructive. She would only use them in battle, or when absolutely necessary. Rydia is not an evil person, so she wouldn't use her powers unless she was being threatened or being helpful.
Appearance: Rydia looks young, even though she's nearing adulthood. She has medium-length pale green, feathered hair and green eyes. She's slender, perhaps petite. Her skin is pale, but not so pale that you can see through her. She's often seen wearing green. She likes to be decorated, usually with gold and other finery. Her clothing choices are more practical for her surroundings than anything else. For visual references, click

Background/Personality: Final Fantasy IV is about a quest to save the world from an evil Lunarian, Zemus. Zemus uses manipulation and powerful magic to try to gather all the Crystals of the Earth and open the way to the Moon. Once the way to the Moon is open, he plans to have the Lunarians take over the Earth. Since Zemus possesses psychic powers, he uses his powers to manipulate Cecil and Golbez. Both of these men are brothers, half-Lunarians, and sons of the Lunarian KluYa. Because they are half Lunarian, they're easier to manipulate.
At the beginning of the game, Cecil is a Dark Knight. He is disturbed by the fact that the King of Baron is asking him to murder innocent people in his quest to gather the Light Crystals. Still, Cecil is determined to stay faithful to his king, even though it's bothering his conscious.
The King of Baron sends Cecil and Kain - Cecil's best friend and a Dragoon under the Kingdom of Baron - to deliver a package to the village of Myst. In order to get to the village of Myst, Kain and Cecil must past through the cave guarding the Myst Valley. The Myst Dragon inhabits the cave. The dragon won't let Cecil and Kain pass to get to the village. Percieving the Dragon as a threat, Kain and Cecil kill it in order to get to the village of Myst.
This is when they first encounter Rydia. She is about 5 years old at the time. Her mother was connected to the Myst Dragon. When the Dragon died, she died. Therefore, Cecil and Kain are responsible for the death of Rydia's mother.
When Cecil and Kain enter the village of Myst, the package opens. It contains a Bomb (a monster). The Bomb sets fire to the entire village. This event causes Rydia to be afraid of fire. As a result, she refused to cast a fire spell until later events in the game.
Cecil and Kain tried to save Rydia from the destruction of her village. But Rydia recognized them as her mother's killers. She summoned Titan, her very first act of summoning. Titan caused an avalanche that permanently separated the village of Myst from the rest of the world.
When Rydia woke up she was alone with Cecil in a village. After that she had to help him in battle as they picked their way across the continent. At first, Rydia could do low-level white magic, black magic and summoning. Along the way she met other people, like Tellah the Sage, Edward the Bard, Rosa the White Mage and Yang, a Monk from Fabul (one of the Kingdoms that held a coveted crystal). Her interaction with Yang was brief, but he showed very protective behavior towards her.
She had a sort of silent respect for Tellah, since he was a very old Sage, and could cast both white and back magic, just like her.
Edward, the Bard and the Prince of Damcyan (another Kingdom that held a Crystal), irritated Rydia a lot. His whimpering over the loss of his lover Anna caused her to have a very rude outburst towards him.
Rosa, the White Mage, and Cecil's lover, was the one that encouraged her to conquer her fear of fire by casting fire on the ice wall that blocked off a mountain passage. Rydia came to respect Rosa as a mage and friend later on in the game. But this particular event shows that Rydia is very brave when she wants to be, and she can overcome obstacles despite her fear. It also shows that sometimes she's in need of encouragement; she's not overly confident. She gets scared just like everyone else.
On her way to Fabul, Rydia was abducted by Leviathan, the King of Summons. He took her back to the Land of Summoned Monsters (or the Feymarch) to hone her skills as a summoner. Here she sacrificed her white magic to gain greater control of her summoning capabilities.
When she returned to Cecil, both of them had changed. He had rejected the dark path he was on, and became a Paladin, a holy warrior. Rydia had aged significantly. Time passes differently in the Land of Summoned Monsters. Years in that world equals days in her home world. Surprisingly to Cecil, Rydia now appeared to be a teenager. Together with Rosa and Kain, the four of them took on the responsibility of stopping Zemus's plans from coming to fruition.
As the game progressed, Rydia met new people, learned more spells, and became a very powerful ally. One of these people was Edge, Ninja Prince of Eblan. Edge irritated her to no end. He had a crush on Rydia, and although he was older than her, he showed his feelings in very immature ways. It was a complete turn-off to her. During their in-game interactions, she never had anything nice to say to him.
As far as her progression as a mage, Rydia went on to become a master black mage and the most powerful summoner of her tribe. During the game, she took on Golbez, a Lunarian and another powerful mage, all by herself and defeated him, showing her bravery once again. She was key in defeating the major villains of the game, including the Four Fiends and the final boss, Zemus/Zeromus (the spirit of his hatred after his death). She even learned the fabled "Meteor" spell, the most powerful spell in the world.
Because her mother died when she was young, Rydia has always felt she needed to be strong and mature. She told Edward at one point to stop crying after he lost Anna. Her reasoning was she lost her mother, and she didn't cry. He was a grownup, so he should be handling things better. While she was a child then, that lesson stuck with her her entire life. Even when she came back to the surface Rydia still displayed thinking abilities, strength and bravery that normally can't be attributed to people her age.
Being abducted by Leviathan and taken to the Land of Summoned Monsters meant that Rydia spent more than half her life being raised by various creatures, from chocobos to Bombs to dragons. She seems to be very civilized, and in fact she is. Overall she's calm, cool and collected. She can be very friendly too. But she does have a temper as well, as seen when she summoned Titan, and again when she called Edge an idiot after he told her to "be a good girl." While her anger is usually justified, sometimes she can overreact to situations.
Since she was raised by monsters, she would be a bit kinder to animals and other such creatures. She has a proven, established rapport with her summoned creatures. She's also very logical and practical. One example of this is when she stole away on the Lunar Whale to help Cecil defeat Zeromus. Even though Cecil told her to go home with Rosa, they knew that he would need their help, so she did what she felt she had to do. This also shows that she cares about her friends and will always do what's best for them if given the chance.
She's a team player. She's used to being supported, since she's always been surrounded by people who need her abilities and/or care about her. She's not perfect though. Aside from her temper she doesn't seem to like immaturity or arrogance very much. It will set her off. She will throw insults and speak frankly (she told Edward to shut up when she was a kid), but ultimately she doesn't mean any harm whatsoever.
Why do you want to continue their history here: I don't. I'm filling in this section to let you know what's up. You've probably seen that my character is still friends with other characters from another game. That game died in 2007. I haven't roleplayed her since then. I feel like I didn't get to fully develop her, so I want to play her in Mostly Harmless, but at the same time, I want to start over with her. That's why I'm taking her straight out of canon. Make sense?
Have you read up on how the game works?: Yes. The name of the Guide-plugin is called Flaming Ferret. Three ways Rydia can earn money on the ship are missions, freelance or mooch off of other people (or something else equally creative up to my discretion :D). She can also steal but there's a good chance she'll get caught. Alternately, if she works hard she can eventually get a permanent job or open her own business.
1st person sample: [The guide turns on accidentally. Rydia is seen fiddling with it; she's still trying to figure everything out. Technology isn't new to her, but advanced technology is. She finally gets it right - or so she thinks - and settles down to talk to anyone willing to listen.]
I've had such a terrible day. Everything on me hurts but my feet hurt the worst. I don't think I've ever worked that hard in my life. Not even the chores in the Feymarch were that hard.
[Despite her obvious lack of happiness, she manages a little smile.]
Everyone around me seems to be adjusting pretty well though. I feel so utterly wretched about that. I'm not used to being completely alone. I mean, I know I'm not alone - I'm on a huge ship full of people. But I don't know anyone here.
[She sighs.]
I guess I'm just...what's the word? Overwhelmed? It's so crowded and nothing is familiar and I have so much I have to learn. I keep worrying about my friends too. What happened to them? Will I ever find any of them? Or am I the only survivor?
I'll take the company of anyone at this point. Even a ball of lint.
[She looks resigned. She stands up and stretches.]
I guess I should go shower. I need to get the smell of onions off of me. I hate peeling vegetables. I never, ever want to see another onion as long as I live.
3rd person sample: Rydia wasn't sure she could survive another day in her high-heeled boots. They were fine for walking around in on the moon, and traveling through forests and deserts, but for some reason, on this ship, they were starting to hurt her feet. She grimaced, feeling her little toe rub up against the inside of her shoes. Her feet were cramped. She thought she felt them throbbing too. Maybe she should buy some new shoes, some flat shoes that were airy and would let her feet breathe.
The only problem with that was she had very little money to go towards a pair of shoes. She was supposed to be saving up for a better place to stay. But the shoes were an immediate necessity. If she didn't get some soon, she wouldn't last another day at work.
Sighing, she resolved to take what little she had and buy a pair after her shift was over. There were so many shops. There was bound to be one that sold good shoes at reasonable prices. Perhaps she could just ask someone.
As cautious as she was about approaching strangers, Rydia knew it was necessary - just like her shoes. She sighed, and resolved to muster up the courage to ask one of her co-workers if they knew anything. Maybe, if she tried really hard and was polite, she could even make a friend.
Questions?: Nah. I'm good, thanks.
