What got cut so as not to make the longest post ever

Am terribly behind on my fic exchange reading. I was planning on posting more recs, but, yeah, that hasn't happened.

I got my assignment for silentlikestone which I am excited about. Now I just have to figure out what to write. I've got a few ideas already, I just need to stalk my recipient's journal for a few days so I can decide what she might like best ( Read more... )

fic exchanges, writing, subrosa tennis

Even if you don't have a fic archive to link to, if you want to I don't see why you shouldn't attempt the next subrosa challenge. If anything, you can do it for the challenge of the themes supplied, and to see if you can guess who wrote what. :D

As for gifts, I agree with you completely. If the fic isn't up to the recipient's standard or just something that doesn't work with them, then they should perhaps not sign up for fic exchanges. It's something every author should be aware of, that in joining you won't always get what you're looking for. I mean, if they requested something, warned about not including something, but the writer goes ahead and does that, then I can't see why they can't complain (eloquently, though). Just, if it were me, I'd not ever bring it up, or just keep it with close friends and off LJ. People can't help being picky, people also can't help but try. :\

Setting problem. I usually don't think too much about the setting when I write (which is obvious I think). I used to, before I hit my writing phase; I used to agonize over every detail, used to want to include everything I could think of. Then I realized sometime detail is best sparingly, and when writing, don't just jump into describing the scene, include it in the plot. For example, don't start a scene describing the landscape. Start with the characters, and incorporate the things around them as they speak, move, etc. That's how I think. Which, is easier said than done, and sometimes not the best advice. Um. ._.;

If someone deliberately writes their recipients' squicks or just doesn't pay attention to the squick list then I think complaining is completely justified.

Other than that, if the recipient's not happy, I think they should keep quiet about it (at least the writer tried, right?) or complain on IM or something. Don't complain in your journal, unlocked (or even under general flock), especially if it's about something that wasn't included on the squick list!

I have been trying to keep this as general as possible so as not to be wanky, but that's what really got to me.

Incorporating the things around the characters as they speak & move rather than just describing the setting separately from the action is what I'm trying to do in this revision. Like you said, it's easier said than done, but I've worked on it a bit more and it's getting there. I'm feeling a lot more satisfied with my attempts than I was this morning.
