I decided to take advantage of the Tuesday we have off, and run out of town for a few days. I'm in Pucón, which is in the Lakes Region of Chile. Supposedly Switzerland-like. Gorgeous, to be sure. The first day I arrived I rode my bike up to another lake, where I was astounded by the pristineness and emptyness of it all (Lago Caburgua). Yesterday I did tirolesa (English? Canopy?), and thermal baths, and then a quick ride to the other part of Lago Villarica. Stunning. Today is cloudy, but not rainy. I'm hanging out with a Brazillian who is sweet as pie. I hate to make sweeping generalizations about the people of an entire country, but Brazillians are just lovely. Lovely. This one lives in Santiago and doesn't seem as crazy as my old friend A who was really nuts. Hyper, yes. Crazy, no.
And I was starting to feel badly about leaving town without notifying my family. And this morning I got a cryptic message on my cell which was my mother's voice saying "hello?" And I thought, oh crap. Now what? They don't call often ever. Tried to use the phone here in the phone/internet place, and it didn't work, for some reason. So I hopped on the computer to Skype my family. And I had to go to my hotmail to find the password for my account. And I found an email from my mom telling me that my nephew (due June 6th) had been born! Surprise! That's what my sister gets for naming him after a person who was perennially early. (my recently deceased paternal grandfather). He's in the NICU for a couple of days, having been born not completely cooked, and will see the orthopedist for his foot thing. Talked to my mom, and sis (the new baby's mother). She had postpartum depression/psychosis with the last one, so we are all watching her doggedly. She seems great. And the babe has wavy, dark hair, which I can't see in the hospital photos because of that goofy cap.
So that's me in a nutshell. An aunt again and in the drizzle in the south of Chile. Yay!
