Summary: On the first day of summer, Honey has a lovely dream, and Mori is buried under the sand.

Honey wakes up by slow degrees: first his eyelashes flicker, then his nose twitches, just slightly, then his lips part to inhale deeply, and exhale, and then his eyelids flutter open to the sight of warm golden sunshine. He sits up, rubbing his eyes with the back of one hand while clutching Usa-chan to his chest with the other, then he blinks drowsily at the boy sitting beside the bed and he mumbles, “Morning, Takashi.”

The corners of Mori’s lips lift by half a centimetre in reply.

Honey yawns into his hand, then says, “I had a lovely dream last night, want to hear it?”

Mori nods.

Honey takes a deep breath. “I was picking strawberries in a big field and there were flowers everywhere and I looked up when a bunny hopped by to say hello and when I looked down again the strawberries in my basket had turned to sand and I was on a beach and summer had come and I buried you under the sand so that you couldn’t move at all,” he says, the words rushing out of his mouth in a single stream of sound. Belatedly, he adds, “And then I woke up.”

Mori considers this for a moment, then gives the reply that he knows Honey is waiting to hear. “That sounds like fun,” he murmurs, and isn’t surprised to realise that he means it.

Honey beams. “Doesn’t it?”

A soft knock on the door announces the arrival of a maid, who promptly shuffles into the room bearing a tray with a large blueberry muffin and a mug of hot milk, which she sets on Honey’s lap. “Good morning, Mitsukuni-bochama,” she says, smiling first at Honey, then at Mori.

“Good morning, Kazu-chan!” Honey exclaims, and Mori nods politely. He watches as she leaves, closing the door behind her, and by the time he shifts his gaze back to Honey, half of the muffin is gone; a minute later, the breakfast is finished. Mori reaches out and wipes the milk from Honey’s upper lip with his thumb, and the warm wetness remains on his skin until he follows Honey into the bathroom, where he uses one of the wash basins to scrub his hands clean.

“I think I’ll use the strawberry bubble bath today! Takashi, you like strawberries, right?” Honey chatters as he strips off his pink bunny pyjamas.

“Aa,” Mori says in agreement, picking up the discarded clothing and dropping it into the laundry chute set in the wall. He doesn’t turn around until he hears the sound of Honey stepping into the bathtub, giggling softly as he sits down in the bubbly water.

“Mitsukuni,” Mori says when he does turn around, “Do you want me to wash your back?”

Honey has a smear of foam on his cheek, which Mori brushes away with a gentle finger; Honey smiles at him with brightly shining eyes. “Yes please!” he says, and promptly presents his back to Mori.

Mori uses a washcloth, soft and thin, and he strokes carefully over nape, shoulders, rib cage and lower back; he takes a deep breath, filling his head with the scent of strawberries, and then sits back on his heels. “Done,” he murmurs.

“Sankyuu,” Honey mumbles, drowsy again after Mori’s slow touches.

He doesn’t climb out until the skin on his fingers starts to wrinkle, stepping out of the bathtub and straight into the towel that Mori is holding out for him. At Mori’s reminder, Honey brushes his teeth diligently, then wanders out of the bathroom while Mori unplugs the bathtub and deposits the towel into the laundry chute.

When Mori returns to the bedroom, Honey is standing before one of the floor-to-ceiling windows, a small dark silhouette with a halo of golden light; he glances up when Mori walks over to him.

“Look, Takashi, summer has come,” Honey says, and his smile is brighter than the sunshine. “Let’s go to the beach!”

“Aa,” Mori says, thinking of sand, sand in Honey’s basket of strawberries and sand closing in over him. “That sounds like fun.”
