“I’m scared,” I told Akako.
“Scared of what?” she asked me gently.
I swallowed. “Did you know that Kaito got shot tonight?” Of course she knew, she had been there, but I couldn’t seem to stop. “He got shot, and one of Dad’s officers got killed, and if he’d been just a little slower he-he-”
“I know,” Akako said, and she gathered me into her arms. “I know.”
“There was nothing I could do!” I was crying, sobbing into her shoulder, and I couldn’t stop, didn’t want to stop. “Nothing I could do at all.”
“I know,” Akako said again, and somehow she did know. She held me until my shaking stopped, until I had no more tears to cry. I felt safe in her arms-but I knew now that that safety was just an illusion. Nothing was safe, not really.
“He wouldn’t let me help him.” I drew back to look at Akako, searching her face for answers. “What can I do if he won’t let me help him?”
Her eyes were sad, and old, as if she too had searched for answers, and found none. “You can be strong for him. Let him know you love him.”
“It’s not enough.”
Her eyes softened, and she reached out and cradled my cheek in her palm. “You can make him laugh.”
“It’s not enough,” I repeated, frustrated. Angry. Helpless.
“I know,” Akako said. “But sometimes it’s all we’ve got.”
