Two sudden shifts here: prompted by her exasperation with Paul Peter's non-directions to the campfire, Despina looks up giving directions in her borrowed book.

I don't see the shift in the first one. Each day, she comes up with a lesson, hopefully based on things useful to her students, and does her best to teach that skill set. This is where so much of the cultural conflict erupts (or should, when I get enough into the story that it pops for people of the White culture. Native readers will instinctively bridle at some of her attempts... They already KNOW where it pinches.)

The second example is already explained, but I moved it closer to the actual beginning of the story.

All is fine here for me. I find Cu's interactions with Despina interesting. And the fact that he has blue eyes is certainly interesting.
