Empty

She gazed longingly at the football field. It stirred so many memories, yet she couldn’t put a finger on one she liked best. Lately it seemed unrecognizable, it seemed surreal- as if the football field that was once magical, was now very much a dead dream.

Tears streamed down her cheeks and her face flustered. She hung her head low, shoulders stooped. Her breathing became heavy as she reminisced on the very first time she laid eyes on him. Jacob -her first love, her first dream. And she was at that spot the moment she saw him on this very day two years ago.

“Serena, I’ll never leave you. You’ve changed me, and I’ve seen so much more when I’m with you,” are the exact words he had said before. And now every time it came to her mind, she felt a pang.

Serena would give anything just to see him play football one last time. She would give anything to hold his hand, or feel him close in an embrace. She would tell him how he made her feel: Loved. Important. Needed.

She distinctively remembered once he played Captain for the match the team won for the first time. Serena’s heart filled with pride when he held the challenge trophy. Finally, her heart swelled when he winked at her and flashed her the most beautiful smile she had ever seen. It was then he looked most dashing, and she could never have been more happy for him.

Today, after two magnificent years with her first love, Serena had just returned from the cemetery. The tombstone of her beloved Jacob stood coldly on the ground, probably to signify his loneliness and emptiness that made Serena want him here even more.

Though sinful, everyday she would beg God for a little bargain, to give her Jacob. Even after two years, the emptiness she felt had never subsided and the pang in her guts never went away.
