How painful is the return of the prodigal son.
I do love Giles' confession to his father, with the "Pater", his father's reaction to led him outside and not to condemn him.
Your use of the Psalm 31 is perfect.

I love that this had the guts to allow Giles to be the one at the heart of his own downfall, and that it had the depth to give him the place to fall home to. This father is the one who raised the Giles I think we knew, and certinaly the Giles of Dark Ages -the one who can fight, and then heal, all of those around him, and forgive them their own screwups. This is his home.

I particularly liked the visual link between the mess on the kitchen plate and the mess left behind in London. I'll be avoiding jam for the next couple of days, I should think...
