Ouch, ouch, ouch.
How painful is the return of the prodigal son.
I do love Giles' confession to his father, with the "Pater", his father's reaction to led him outside and not to condemn him.
Your use of the Psalm 31 is perfect.

Beautifully written as always.
Thank you so much for sharing this!

Thank you! (I've been struggling with a 31st Psalm story for a long time.)

Absolutely beautiful in all it's misery and depth. What I especially love about this piece - what compelled me to go back and start over again as soon as I'd reached the end - is that you took what is cannon and made it more. So often Giles' father is unredeemable, and Ethan is set out at the cause of it all, the reckless one, Giles the reluctant participant in his own rock bottom.

I love that this had the guts to allow Giles to be the one at the heart of his own downfall, and that it had the depth to give him the place to fall home to. This father is the one who raised the Giles I think we knew, and certinaly the Giles of Dark Ages -the one who can fight, and then heal, all of those around him, and forgive them their own screwups. This is his home.

Thank you for sharing this piece.

Wonderful. Evocative and compelling and disturbingly plausible.

I particularly liked the visual link between the mess on the kitchen plate and the mess left behind in London. I'll be avoiding jam for the next couple of days, I should think...

(If such things matter to you, it's spelled 'Deirdre'.)

Now I'm off to try to work out what exactly a 'Summer of Giles' might be. :)

A Summer of Giles is two months with somebody signed up to post something Giles-y every single day of the time. It's in the tradition of seasonal fests like spring_with_xan and seasonal_spuffy. The weekly feedback lists are probably the best way to see what people have done this year and in previous years.
