Title: A promise
Pairing: HanHae
Rating: PG
Summary: Sometimes, you're worth more than you think you are.
The cool wind whispered softly across his cheeks, his hair joined in the gentle dance with the thin fabric that served as protection over his body. A slight chill ran up his spine, he shuddered, before sighing-looking out into the vast black of the night. Donghae rests his elbows on the window sill of his expensive condo, and supported his weight against it. He breathed. Closing his eyes at the sweetness of the chilly air, a light scent of rain catching his senses, there was never a time more peaceful than this very moment. The city looked beautiful in the dead of the night. A few cars passed, the malls were closed, and the street was quiet. Walkways were faintly illuminated by the few lamps that lined the curb. From his high rise apartment, Donghae saw the entire outline of the city.
A scene like this always sets him thinking, his day of events. People often say he thinks too much, but Donghae thinks it’s just replaying parts of his life in his mind. Since he can’t make them happen again to edit the wrongs, or to relish in the better ones, he figured he could think them through and sort them out. Memories are important to him, and the sweetest took up nearly the whole of him. He smiled at that thought.
He straightened when a warm presence filled his back. Arms circled his waist, and he leaned back against the firm chest. Donghae covered his own hands over the ones that hugged him. He felt a kiss pressed sweetly to his temple, and turned his head so that the soft lips met his.
“A penny for your thoughts?”
Donghae smiled at the question, and turned to circle his arms around his lover’s neck. The soft accented voice sent warmth spreading through his body. He looked up into the deep brown eyes, and wondered what good he’d done to deserve the love of this man before him.
“Are my thoughts worth so little to you?” A tinge of mischief accompanied his light tone. The chuckle that answered his tease made him want to snuggle deeper into the strong arms that held him.
“Donghae ah, you know you mean how much to me.”
Said person giggled and hugged the man, feeling the arms tighten around him. Nuzzling the chilly tip of his nose into the softly scented warmth of the other’s neck, so warm, he sighed. “I was just joking, Hannie, just joking.”
Donghae closed his eyes as both men stayed lock in the embrace. The wind was still playing, though the energy was slowly dying, and he felt safe, against the thudding of Hangeng’s chest. The soft rhythm, an enchanting lullaby he loved. He would really have drifted off, if not for the accented voice that broke through the cloud in his mind.
“So… what were you thinking?” Hangeng stroked the head of silky strands nestled in the crook of his neck, and said thoughtfully.
“Hm. You know… the usual stuff.”
Donghae never had ‘the usual stuff’ in his head, because his thoughts range from the lunch he had that day, to his parents in Mokpo. Hangeng was smart enough to not assume what was on the other’s mind, because the last time he did, his thoughtful lover had claimed he loved acting smart. “No, I don’t know, what’s the usual stuff?”
He stopped his administrations through the silky strands when Donghae lifted his head to look at him. Teeth chewed on a plump lip in consideration, before meeting his eyes again. Hangeng tilted his head in question.
“Why do I deserve you?” It was a long moment of silence as Hangeng processed the sudden piece of information. He wasn’t expecting that. Sure, he was prepared for anything from his boyfriend, but this? He never thought the younger man would ever doubt himself. Donghae scoffed lightly at himself infinity counts later. “Forget that, I must be too tired, or the wind must be blowing me insane.”
Hangeng caught the slim wrist just before Donghae could turn and walk away. The hurt in the meek tone did not escape his ears. “Hae-wait, are you crying?” The elder man stooped a little to look into the downturned face of his lover, who was trying to hide from his gaze.
It took a little more than a struggle to finally get Donghae to look at him, with his arms locked tight around his body. “You’re crying-“
“NO! My eyes are sweating!”
Hangeng didn’t know whether to laugh or grow concern at the remark, because his lover had just confirmed his speculation with his shaky voice and tearful eyes.
He chuckled as he brought Donghae’s head against him again. Hangeng rested his head atop of the other’s and hugged him tight. Rocking their bodies side to side, joining in the little dance with the soft breeze, “Donghae ah,” He rubbed soothingly over his back, before straightening again to hold the younger man’s face in both his palms. He brushed his thumbs across the cheeks, which were lightly tainted with pink he believed was more from the chill, and smiled.
“Love is a chance, haven’t you always say that we should precious every chance we have?” He continued when the other nodded. “Trust is a gift, so would you reward me with this gift in exchange for the chance that I’m giving you unconditionally, and without reserves? Would you do that for me too?”
It took surprisingly little effort for Donghae to understand what Hangeng was trying to say, he bit his tongue to make sure this wasn’t a dream. It was so sweet he felt his heart bursting with love. “Hangeng,” he breathed and lunged into his lover’s waiting arms.
“I love you, Lee Donghae. Never doubt yourself, and how much you mean to me. Never.”
The last word was meant solely for his ears and Donghae couldn’t keep the happiness from bubbling within him. He inhaled the other’s warmth again, a habit he decided he couldn’t possibly kick, a delicate scent he was addicted to. He reached up to seal a promise of his own. “I’d do anything for you.”
