so i've been meaning to update about my wonderful weekend but haven't found the time in my oh so busy schedule (yes, you're reading sarcasm). my existence is absolutely lazy. i'm still unemployed and working on broke. the organizing job said they should know about the funding situation the week after thanksgiving so we'll see how that goes. in the meantime, i had a successful interivew with US Airways as a fleet service agent loading/unloading baggage and other such duties. i'm waiting on the formalities (background check, drug screen etc) to come back before i can start training. apparently this takes a good 3 weeks so who knows with the kind of luck i've been having. it would be a great UNION job to have and i hope it works out assuming the organizing gig doesn't. i'm working on getting in better shape and memorizing a ton of airport codes in preparation.
i've very much fallen into an incredibly dissapointing and boring routine. i panic at the thought of spending money so i rarely leave the house on my own during the day in fear that i will spend. just going to a coffee shop could cost me a good 2 bucks and before i know it, its all gone. if i ride my bike around the city, what if i get thristy and wan't to get a vitamin water or something? thats another 3 bucks i'll never get back and there goes the rent. before i know it, i'll be feeding the dogs white rice and living on ramen. i know this is a really silly way to think but i do have all day to think about it....and usually do. so i still watch dawsons creek promptly 9 and read (i've finally welcomed auguesten burroughs into my life) while drinking water and lefter over cranberry juice from my pre-test "cleansing." i make hilary's breakfast and pack her lunch. if i'm lucky, there are back to back episodes of true life on mtv. then its time for lunch and looking to find something around the house to do. yesterday it was a massive removal of doggy poo from the back yard. today i might clean out the fridge. then its time for my daily instant message date with an old union friend who now works in hawaii but hopes to be hired for the same position as me as long as the funding comes thru. then i might catch some ellen and wait patiently for hilary to return so we can go to the gym. 30 minuties on the elipital, weight training and then home to make dinner. maybe i'll play some cards with the wifey before we settle in for the latest movie to arrive in the mail via blockbuster online. bed at 11. repeat.
so you can imagine my delight when this routine is disrupted. this was the case this past weekend. while on our trip to wildwood this past summer, gave hil an envelope of coupons to be used throughout the year to celebrate our anniversary. the envelops are mostly just cheap and fun stuff we can do together like playing backgammon in the park or baking her a fresh goodie. one of the coupons was for a country drive and she redeemed it this past weekend. I searched online to find s a good place to go and realized that Lancaster is only an hour away so that was the obvious choice. While we were at the beach over the summer, we saw an amish family there and the little girls were swimming in the ocean in their dresses. It was a really beautiful sight and I wanted to gawk and take pictures but didn’t want to be disrespectful. We decided we had to take a trip out to amish country and now was a great time.
this was the route we took. the weather was beautiful and some of the leaves hadn’t fallen so there was still some oranges and red. we drove alongside buggies and children in straw hats and suspenders riding their scooters along long farm driveways. i can absolutely appreciate such a simple and quiet life. we stopped in Intercourse, PA which is considered the heart of amish country and browsed some shops and had some awesome homemade ice cream. mint chocolate chip for me; chocolate marshmellow for hilary. back on the road we made a loop to Lancaster. we saw lots of hanging laundry, buggies in driveways, a man with a long beard working his fields with a horse pulled plow, an amish couple raking leaves and then another couple in jeans and sneakers raking leaves or washing their car. I wondered what it would be like to have amish neighbors. at the end of the route, we stopped at this cafeteria style restaurant for yummy soup and salad (budget travel!!) it was only about 4:30 or so when we stopped for this late lunch/early dinner combo so we were the youngest people there by a good 30 years and we were the only couple actually engaging in conversation. ha ha. it was a really nice though. after a quick stop to purchase a vacation magnet for 89 cents to add to our collection, we hit the road back to the city.
the next day was pretty gloomy out so i’m glad we took the country drive when we did. we went to NJ to go to the mall and hil did some shopping while i nervously looked at my in anticipation of the eagles game starting. we headed to a sports bar in the food court to catch the rest of the first half before heading back over the river. they won which was exciting and very overdue.
now its back to the routine….
