Derby!

Excited of course, despite not having electricity in my apartment and no tv. I will listen on HRRN via my iphone.

But then - I read this from Ron Turcotte. And this from Rick Porter. You know, there is no reason in the world that anyone who has a disability and the proper plates shouldn't be able to park in handicapped spots at Churchill. It's that much worse when a jockey like Ron Turcotte - injured in the sport and twice a winner of the race cannot get in to see the race because of the lack of accessability resources at CD. Rick Porter points out the stupidity of the management to not allow owners of horses on the undercard to get decent seats without paying exorbitant fees. Ridiculous. People enter horses on the undercard because of the Derby. Seriously, what are they thinking?

Other horse stuff - in fan-type horse names Effie Trinket is entered in the Distaff Turf Mile Stakes on the Kentucky Derby undercard.

And AritheAdventurer (who I am convinced was named for Arya Stark - came in 2nd in her 3rd start. (She was a winner at first asking for her sire Pioneer ofthe Nile.

Another fannishly named horse is Queen Daenerys - a daughter of Street Sense who was recently scratched from a race today.

But back to the Derby. I would love it if Rosie Napravnik won (on Vicars in Trouble) and became the first female jockey to do so. Plus, Vicars in Trouble is one of those small and courageous horses that I love to see win races and he is the cheapest horse in the race having sold for $8000.00 as a yearling. Most likely going cheaply (relatively) because he is small.

Then - Medal Count: from Dynaformer's last crop. That would be a cool win - giving his sire his second classic winner.

Wicked Strong - not only was he named in honor of Boston post Marathon explosions but also he is sired by Hard Spun - who is one of my favorites. (I think he sires some very pretty babies.)

Dance with Fate: I follow one of his owner's on twitter and instagram: they are crazy excited and the horse is gorgeous.

California Chrome: he's the favorite but his story is also cool: if he won he would be only the 4th Cal-bred to win the Derby and his trainer was the exersize rider for the second (Swaps.) The last Cal-bred to win was Decidedly in 1962. So it would be a pretty big deal if it happens. He's got a good post position too: not too close to the rail and not to far off it either (and not in the second gate.)

A good story about California Chrome and his connections.

kentucky derby!, horsies!
