Natalie watched in awe as her surroundings changed around her. Before her eyes the lights flashing around the room became brighter and more vibrant; they moved by themselves, creating intricate patterns in the air.
The music changed as well. It became louder; the sounds richer and the lyrics more profound. The heavy bass line developed into a powerful heartbeat that made the floor vibrate in time. Natalie choked back a laugh as she looked at the floor in front of her. She could see where the floorboards rose and fell in time with a hidden monster's breathing. The image of a disgruntled monster curled up under her feet seemed hilarious all of a sudden; which was unusual for Natalie seeing as she didn't normally find such things amusing.
Then there were the other people in the club. Somehow, when she wasn't looking, everyone went from the boring old people who normally danced there to amazing creatures. There was a woman who caught Natalie's attention immediately. She seemed to glow from inside, setting her apart from the other dancers. He skirt flowed about her with a mind of its own, moving even though she stood still. Natalie was sure that this woman was more than she seemed; an enchanting being such as her had to be special.
It was only when her view was blocked that Natalie observed the others around her more carefully. There was a man with blue skin, who stared at her with slit pupils before walking away slowly, his bald head reflecting the club's lights; a woman with immense wings that brushed the ground talked to a group of girls with hair that changed colour constantly, laughing as a joke was told; a couple with cat ears and tails lounged on a couch, lazily sipping their drinks and whispering to each other, seemingly oblivious to all around them.
Natalie sat back in her chair and looked at the moving lights with interest. After watching them for a while she decided she'd be able to catch one, and proceeded to try. As she was flailing about, voices floated around her, entering through one ear and ribboning out the other; the meaning of the words failing to register in the process.
“...idiot. What has she taken?...”
“...should just leave her...”
“...Hey, is she ok?”
Natalie managed to catch a light. As she brought it closer to her face, she noticed that the light was a fairy (as she suspected). It wasn't until her hands were near her face that the fairy smiled, revealing long, sharp teeth. It flew into Natalie's face, causing her to lurch backwards and try to swat it away. Her friends rushed around to find out what was wrong, but they didn't help.
Two faces came into Natalie's field of vision, making her jump. One of them had snakes for hair, which hissed viciously and writhed about her face. The medusa-woman reached out towards Natalie, making her back away.
“...you ok?”
The second face was looking relieved. She smiled, exposing rows of pointed teeth, giving the seemingly normal face a sinister feel. She also reached towards Natalie, with fingers tipped with blood red nails. Natalie was sure she saw a red substance dripping from one of the nails, and jumped out of her seat, trying to make her escape from the strange building. She was blocked at the door by a bulky, heavily tattooed man.
“...alright there...?” The man looked concerned, and opened the door he was guarding. He opened it ever so slowly, making Natalie fidget on the spot. The heartbeat under her was getting louder, throbbing in her ears.
As she walked past the man, she noticed that one of his tattoos was moving. She stopped to have a closer look, much to the man's confusion. The tattoo was a bird of some sort; which was preening itself proudly. As Natalie tried to work out what type of bird it was, it looked up and flew at her, off the man's arm. Natalie screamed and ran outside, only to be met with another terrifying scene.
On the street (with the beat still hammering) were a group of horrifying creatures. There were a group of girls that looked like they were crying blood; a man drinking a woman's blood from her neck; two teenage boys so pale she could see through them.
One person stepped out of the crowd towards Natalie cautiously. As he stepped into the light, his appearance made her cry out. Instead of eyes he had pitch black holes that seemed to soak all the light from around him.
“...miss? My name...”
Natalie looked at the people outside once more before spinning around, ready to go back inside. At the door were the tattooed man, the medusa-woman and her friend, all calling her name. Behind them stood her hidden monster; a dragon looming behind them silently.
Natalie's eyes widened as the beating in her ears got louder; the dragon lifted its head and roared wildly. The noise echoed in her head, and she reeled as her sight blackened from the edges. The darkness increased until all she could see was the dragon. It scowled at her as the darkness swallowed her completely.

In year 11 my English teacher told us to write an imaginative journey. She gave us nothing else to go by, so a fair few of us had some troubles. The girls who sat next to me decided she would write about a green leprechaun with bright pink hair. After a few false starts I wrote the above story. The image I had (and still have) in my head is much more vivid and detailed than this story , and I could rewrite it, but that's not really the point. I really like this story, even if I wish it was able to describe the situation better.
