So. Just got back from seeing Twilight. Let me be clear: I am not a fan. I haven't read the books and I have no intention of doing so. However, my sister really likes them, and as I love her, I promised I'd go see the movie with her. At midnight. Which promised to be interesting, at least.
It was...ok. I was really entertained by the first half of the movie, because I was laughing pretty much nonstop. By the second half, I was bored. Evidently, the book has NO PLOT WHATSOEVER.
But OMG, the SPARKLES! The boy literally steps into the sunlight, and suddenly he's rhinestone-encrusted. It is fucking HILARIOUS. I seriously recommend seeing at least that clip, because how that shit could be in anything remotely serious is beyond me.
The crowd was absolutely NUTS. There were a ton of people there, the vast majority of them young and female, and they were OBSESSED. They squeed through the WHOLE MOVIE. I seriously think the theater had a collective orgasm when Edward first came onscreen - at least, that's what it sounded like.
Here's the thing. I see the appeal of escapist romance. I do. But this is not GOOD escapist romance. Edward - at least, as portrayed here - was not attractive. He was awkward and weird and stalkerish and a total pussy and he couldn't pick a personality. Bella was a complete Mary Sue - everyone fell in love with her at first sight. Seriously. At LEAST four guys within the first twenty minutes. There was no story. There was no tension, no buildup, and no payoff. If I'd gone in expecting to feel something other teh lulz, I would have been seriously disappointed.
For her part, my sister thought it was better than she thought it would be but not as good as the books. I think that means at least one sequel and probably more.
I think I'm going to start keeping a copy of Kushiel's Dart at the register with me when I'm working at the bookstore, so I can recommend to it anyone who tries to buy Twilight. It is WORLDS better.
