The president comparing Iraq to Viet Nam...
If this had been said by a president who had more support and who would more likely than not be listened to by some sort of majority in this country, it may have been beneficial. However, this is not the case. Did anyone feel the massive wave of eye rolling and mouths agape across the country? Just curious.
I am for troop withdrawal and yes the consequences in the short run will be bad, but to use one of the worst US foreign policies to try and make your case is just an incredible mistake. To say that too many bad memories and feelings are still attached to a war that took over 50,000 US lives is a huge understatement. The war in Iraq and the middle east has been going on for decades before we ever landed there.
As horrible as it is, if we need to stay there longer than desired (I hate saying this, no more people need to die in this badly managed war, soldier and civilian alike), then we need to have new leaders and a new strategy, including getting other nations to provide more assistance, including troops. We need huge numbers of soldiers, many more than we have or could ever amass in enough time to make a difference. We need to have a president who will actually ENGAGE and not just repeat the same things over and over from what is now his own perceived ivory tower at 1600 Penn. Ave.
To repeat the same action over and over and expect different results is defined as insanity.
As shocking as it may sound, people are more willing to listen and give aid if the person who needs it actually asks with a sense of humility and cooperation, not blind, deaf and dumb tunnelvision.
*ring* "Good morning, sir, this is your wake up call from the Reality Desk, thank you."
