ATHENS, Ohio (AP) - Matt Muncy recovered a botched punt snap for a touchdown and Kalvin McRae rushed for 136 yards and a score as Ohio beat Akron 17-7 Thursday night to win the Mid-American Conference East Division.
The Bobcats (8-3, 6-1) will play West Division winner Central Michigan in the MAC championship game Nov. 30 at Ford Field in Detroit.
Akron, which won its first MAC championship and played in its first Division I-A bowl game last season, needed to win against Ohio to stay alive for a return trip to the conference title game.
But the Zips (5-6, 3-4) fell behind 17-0 by the third quarter and didn't score until Luke Getsy 's 19-yard TD pass to Jabari Arthur with 6:56 remaining.
McRae ran 3 yards for a score with 7:37 left in the second quarter, and Ohio made it 14-0 about four minutes later on Muncy's recovery in the end zone. Matt Lasher added an 18-yard field goal with 5:03 left in the third.
McRae comprised most of the Bobcats' offense, carrying on 31 of their 50 rushes. Ohio ran for 208 yards and passed for 49, with Austen Everson connecting on 6-of-15 attempts with no interceptions.
Getsy went 21-of-46 for 227 yards with two interceptions. Akron ran for only 11 yards on 21 carries.
