- Background -
It was the simple passing through of a group of Shinigami that led to Renji’s murder in the streets of Rukongai. It was a simple matter of pride and an attempt to steal food, pitiful reasons for Shinigami to use their weapons against an unarmed young man. Rukia was left alone, bitter over his death and overwhelmed with being truly alone, something she had only felt previously as a child. Renji’s death also changed her view of Shinigami, causing her to harbor a deep dislike for them that can border on hatred. The idea of becoming one was out of the question, despite the life it could have provided her. She would also not leave Rukongai, as she could not leave Renji behind.
Despite that, it was nearly 20 years later where Captain Byakuya, by chance, caught sight of her on a nearby street. The fact that she lacked even the standing of a Shinigami made the clan’s elders all the more against her adoption, though it proceeded in the end. Rukia opposed the adoption for many reasons, but hesitantly accepted a short time later. It was too difficult to oppose such a daunting man of so many resources.
Lacking the duties of a Shinigami that would otherwise keep her occupied, Rukia adjusted to her new life. Living among nobility and being taught proper behavior soon became a large part of her existence, despite her unwillingness for it. However, her attitude had not changed.
She did not forget the Shinigami responsible for Renji’s death. It was not long after her adoption that she learned the murder’s fate- devoured by a hollow on a mission gone wrong. It was too merciful a death for what he deserved.
