I'm in the mood to reflect and appreciate what is often taken for granted by women, especially my younger generation, these days. Did you know that back in B.C days, when a woman had her period or gave birth to a child, she had to be veiled and sent into a corner because she was considered "unclean". 40 days if it was a boy, and a double, 80 days, if it was a girl. Men made Birth control illegal when it was first discovered in the early 20's, because a woman's place was at home with children and she had no right to filter a man's offspring. When feminist rights first emerged it spread all over the country, thus flappers emerged, practicing their rights to work and play side by side with men, and bob and dye their hair instead of the standard long hair women were accostomed to. The flappers were widely looked down upon by men because they wanted to go to school and drink and smoke. Men wanted them to stay at home and do the things they were traditionally supposed to do. The flappers were the first sex symbols. Just thinking about these sort of things make me appreciate. I'm not trying to turn all liberal and hate men or anything. That is hardly my point. It's just so crazy to think that I am in college, I have a job where I get paid more than my male co-worker, and I am able to practice my right to vote. These things are so taken for granted by my generation. Women have been suppressed since the beginning of time. Hell, even in "The beginning of time", women were created as an after thought. We were held back almost in the same way that homosexuals are held down today and in the way that blacks were held down for hundreds of years. We had to fight for the basic rights we have. So many women were so brave to step up and say, "Hey, I'm just the same as you." Even athletics. A self respecting woman was not to do unpleasant things, such as compete or get all sweaty. It was looked down upon. Now it's in the norm. We never REALLY think about it, but it deserves to be reflected upon. Just a thought.
