Songs of the year 2012!

Alright so I'm a bit behind schedule but well never mind.

I've uploaded this as a .zip file because I have problems these days with uploading - our ISP is a bastard to me, basically. But that said, if you want any song individually please just ask and I'll do it :)

In previous years I've struggled to remember what I'd been listening to, so last year I kept a list in the back of my diary. That was great because it meant I didn't have to think very hard, but also I can't for the life in my remember why I included some of them.

Also, I haven't put these in any kind of order because I just wanted to get it done. So there might be weird jumps between genres. Sorry.

>>zip file<<

1. Highly Evolved - The Vines
I'm feeling happy, so highly evolved
Last year I really got back into The Vines/Craig, and I love this song and the way he says 'evolved'. Weirdest accent in the world. Loff.

2. The Year Will End Again - Lucy Wainwright Roche
And while you wait, the snow will fall again
Last year Sam and I saw Lucy twice and both were really great gigs. We talked to her both times and she is just so adorably sweet. I wish she was my BFF, frankly. There was almost a brawl at her gig in Manchester due to some unruly drunks, and she was like, "That doesn't usually happen at my shows!"

3. Capricornia - Allo Darlin'
And when the lights go out and you set the world to rights
When I find you under Capricornia skies
I hadn't ever really got into Allo Darlin' before last year, even though I really liked Henry Rollins Don't Dance. Then I reviewed this for Tasty and really liked it. Sam and I saw them twice last year and they were both ace gigs. They're such a fun band.

4. Heartbeats - José Gonzales
One night to be confused
One night to speed up truth
We had a promise made
Four hands and then away
I actually like all three versions of this song that I have - The Knife, this, and William Beckett's version, but I think this is the one I listened to most last year. Lee told me yesterday that he doesn't like this song! He's wrong.

5. Salinas - Laura Marling
My mother was the saviour of six foot of bad behaviour
With long blonde curly hair down to her thighs
This song gives me a lot of feelings, I dunno.

6. Edge of Seventeen - Stevie Nicks
I went forth with an age old
Desire to please
On the edge of seventeen
I included this because my sister turned 17 last year, but then she fell out with her dad and stopped talking to us, so that was a bit of a bummer. I think I wrote about it? It's been nearly a year now and despite her dad trying, she hasn't been back in touch. So this is included, but tinged with sadness. She turned 18 last month.

7. I Won't Be Your Yoko Ono - Dar Williams
Well, they could talk about me
Yeah, they could talk about me
Throw me to the velvet dogs of pop star history
But I won't be your Yoko Ono
If you're not good enough for me
I love this song for singing along loudly to, and I also love its politics. People really hate on Yoko and I honestly believe it's horrible. She was just a person who fell in love. John Lennon wasn't perfect, and she wasn't a harridan whore. It's anti-feminist to say otherwise I think.

8. Hard to Explain - The Strokes
I missed the last bus
I'll take the next train
I'll try, but you see
It's hard to explain
I say the right thing
But act the wrong way
I like it right here
But I cannot stay
I got back into the Strokes a lot last year too and when I visited Jane we talked about them a lot which was lovely.

9. Champagne Supernova - Oasis
How many special people change?
How many lives are living strange?
Where were you while we were getting high?
This is an ode to my MA and its work in progress.

10. Baby, I'm An Anarchist - Against Me!
'Cause baby, I'm an anarchist,
You're a spineless liberal
I'd always sort of like Against Me but hadn't ever really listened to them, but then last year their lead singer came out as trans and I just thought that that was such a momentous thing that they deserved to be listened to more. She didn't have to do it - it's a massive thing to do so publicly. I was prepared to see tons of transphobic comments but on the whole fans were really supportive. Yay Laura!

11. A Little Soul - Pulp
I had one, two, three,
four shots of happiness
I look like a big man
But I've only got a little soul
I only got a little soul
Sam and Stacey and I saw Pulp last December and it was amazing even though we had seats and even though it was the arena and the band were tiny. We danced like it was 1998. This song was so good!

12. A Brighter Beat - Malcolm Middleton
Out the door
Down the stairs
Out the close
Down the street
On the bus
To the pub
And there people meet
This really encapsulated how I felt a lot of last year.

13. Thunder Road - Bruce Springsteen
So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we aint that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You aint a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me
I never really understood this song until I heard Bruce play it live last June and it just --- it's like it walked off the stage, jumped down my throat and pulled my guts up with it.

14. I Will Follow You Into the Dark - Death Cab for Cutie
No blinding light or tunnels to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If Heaven and Hell decide
That they both are satisfied
Illuminate the NOs on their vacancy signs
Last year I really heard the lyrics in this song. I like this version and I like Amanda Palmer's.

15. Handwritten - Gaslight Anthem
And we waited for the sirens that never come
And we only write by the moon
Every word handwritten
I do adore Gaslight, but when Sam and I saw them last year this was really the only song from their new album that grabbed me. I've gone off seeing them live as they never seem to get the mix right on the audio - the vocals are always too low and it sounds like Brian's singing in a bucket.

16. Lonesome Pine - Carbon Leaf
Lonesome pine, rain or shine
Stands alone, roots unknown
And I'm as brave as you and I'm as afraid as you
And I'm as brave as you and I'm as afraid as you are too
I don't love Carbon Leaf but they are nice driving music, I love this song.

17. Straight to Hell - The Clash
If you can play on the fiddle
How's about a British jig and reel?
Speaking King's English in quotation
As railhead towns feel the steel mills rust water froze
Every year should have a Clash song, probably. This is dedicated to Rachael, who made me a mix CD for my drive home from her house. We had a great time!

18. Ms Jackson - The Vines
I'm sorry Ms. Jackson, I am for real
Never meant to make your daughter cry
I apologize a trillion times
This is just a bonus really.
