It's time for 14valentines again! You can read the rest of today's entries here.

Today I'm going to do a recommendation of 14 punk songs. They're mostly old school but a few newer bits, and some of you might argue that they're not punk songs but to me they are, so there we go.

01. Anti-Nowhere League - I Hate People
I hate people
I hate the human race
I hate people
I hate your ugly face
I hate people
I hate your fucking mess
I hate people
They hate me
Better known for their cover of "Streets of London", this Anti-Nowhere League song is a great angry song and perfect for playing loud to piss off parents.

02. Splodgenessabounds - Two Pints of Lager and A Packet Of Crisps Please
I'll have two pints of lager and a packet of crisps, please
I'll have some pickled onions
And a little bit of cheese, please
Thank you
It's kind of a moronic song and the band never did anything else (Max Splodge is now in the Toy Dolls, I believe) but it's fun to sing along to.

03. Rancid - Cash, Culture and Violence
She says his power is what's happening
Well I'll be sure to be respecting nothing's stopping him
And to move up for him about crushing them
And I'll kick you plain and simple it's a sin man
I like to call this "Hello we're a punk band and we really like the Clash".

04. Sex Pistols - Friggin' in the Riggin'
The first mate's name was Cooper
By Christ he was a trooper
He jerked and jerked until he worked
Himself into a stupor
Not the most politically correct song in the world, and not even the Sex Pistols really, this is from The Great Rock n Roll Swindle and is really dumb, but great fun.

05. The Stranglers - Something Better Change
Something's happening and it's happening right now
You're too blind to see it
Definitely a punk band. I love all their stuff but this is just perfect.

06. Buzzcocks - Orgasm Addict
Well you tried it just for once found it all right for kicks
But now you found out that it's a habit that sticks
And you're an orgasm addict
You're an orgasm addict
The Buzzcocks aren't a great band; they have a handful of good songs, and this is one of them. They were pioneers though, and that can't be undone.

07. Ian Dury & the Blockheads - Reasons to Be Cheerful, pt 3
Something nice to study, phoning up a buddy
Being in my nuddy
Saying hokey-dokey, singalonga Smokey
Coming out of chokey
John Coltrane's soprano, Adi Celentano
Bonar Colleano
Reasons to be cheerful part 3
I adore Ian Dury and the Blockheads and the sweet optimism of this song in particular is partly why. Also definitely a punk band.

08. Swingin' Utters - Lampshade
Moonshine you're a lampshade
I think some of you Libs fans might find echoes of Up the Bracket in this. I love the singer's voice, too

09. The Adverts - Gary Gilmore's Eyes
I'm lying in a hospital, I'm pinned against the bed
A stethoscope upon my heart, a hand against my head
They're peeling off the bandages, I'm wincing in the light
The nurse is looking anxious and she's quivering with fright
I'm looking through Gary Gilmore's eyes
A creepy song but in such an upbeat way, what's not to love? TV Smith, the lead singer, now does crappy punk covers. If someone offers you the chance to see him, don't.

10. The Clash - Death or Glory
But I believe in this-and it's been tested by research
He who fucks nuns will later join the church
It's a classic and you know it.

11. The Ruts - Staring At The Rude Boys
The skins in the corner are staring at the bar
The rude boys are dancing to some heavy heavy ska
It's getting so hot people are dripping with sweat
The punks in the corner are speeding like a jet
Staring at the rude boys
Another classic. It's so evocative of the time and place. It was covered by Gallows (not a punk band) and Lethal Bizzle, but you should avoid that version if at all possible.

12. Mad Caddies - Weird Beard
With nothing left for us to drink
The night was winding down
But still the girls kept swaggering
And still hanging around
Oh! mister can you tell me where i can find a man
The only thing that you will find is the back side of me hand!
Another sailing song which I love. Not to be taken seriously. Mad Caddies are adorable cute.

13. The Mighty Mighty Bosstones - Impression That I Get
Have you ever been close to tragedy
Or been close to folks who have
Have you ever felt a pain so powerful
So heavy you collapse
I've never had to knock on wood
But I know someone who has
Which makes me wonder if I could
The Bosstones were playing at the gig where Himself and I met in person for the first time, so they have a place in my heart. I adore the lead singer's voice because it's so gravelly and low. There's real grief behind these words.

14. Billy Bragg - Between the Wars
I was a miner
I was a docker
I was a railway man
Between the wars
Perhaps the most political song I've chosen today. I love this song and it's simplicity.
