Yesterday on the office desk of my uncle I accidentally saw the DVD with the cover dominated by golden and brown tones. What caught my attention are the following quotes from the reviewers: ‘Some of the most bone crunching fight scenes of the year’, ‘Literally jaw-dropping’, etc. The title was ‘Chocolate’, I hadn’t heard about it before. But apparently it was directed by acknowledged Prachya Pinkaew (‘Ong bak’, ‘Warrior King’).
JeeJa Yanin, the female lead in this no stunt-doubles action sensation, playing a mentally handicapped child gifted with extraordinary martial arts dynamics; combination of autism and talent… This sounds even more interesting. I was truly impressed by her acrobatics and martial arts skills involving mostly taekwondo & thai boxing. It was visible that the choreographer followed many of the ‘textbook’ action sequences especially from Jackie Chan and Tony Jaa movies (for example, chair kicking by the opponents followed by performing mid-air splits over it reminds the similar episode from Jackie Chan’s ‘City Hunter’; hitting thugs running on you with the doors of several refrigerators will bring in attentive spectators’ memories fighting sequences of ‘The Rumble in the Bronx’; balcony scene overall put in my mind the sweet combination of ‘Ong Bak’ and ‘Tom yum goong’). But it doesn’t really matter when you see such a great performance by young actress. Standing on the shoulders of such giants as Bruce Lee, Jackie Chan, Jet Li and Tony Jaa is not shameful at all, on contrary it’s definitely something to be proud of.
After the 89-minute non-stop kicking and punching I watched all the special features and found that it took 4 years for JeeJa Yanin to make this movie including shooting, and intensive every-day training in thai boxing and gymnastics. This is really encouraging! I have an action movie in my mind for more than 3 year s now, but my passion unfortunately still could not realize itself. I’m still looking for stuntmen and martial artists ready to give their skills the real test by starring in a start-up movie mostly done by amateurs. The film industry in our country lacks action movies of this level, I would even say, it totally lacks any movies which I would call action. That’s the opportunity to fill the gap with something extraordinary and fresh! Join the fun!
