Thanks to
psasidhar, I am a really, really, really proud owner of R D Burman’s five volume Legends collection.
And this particular song (Piya Banwari, loosely translated as crazy about my love) from Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s Khubsoorat (a sweet, feel-good flick); with its rich classical context and R D’s fluid melody, is one of my favorites. Needless to say Gulzar’s penchant to blend bliss into the poetic metaphors of nature just takes my breath way.
Every time I look at these two photographs, my hearts is filled with the same sense of elation, as does this song, because I see a connection. It curls up my skin and cuddles my soul. And for 3 minutes and 42 seconds, life is most beautiful.

Daari, daar… piya, phoolon ki chaadhar bhuni
Phoolon ki chaadhar, rangon ki jhaalar bhuni
Bhayi banwari, hui banwari…
Piya Banwari…piya banwari
Pi kahan? Pi kahan? Piya, piya bole re…
(Picture of the view outside my bedroom window.)
Kaale, kaale.. piya, sawaan ke baadal chune
Baadal chunke, aankhon mein kaajal dhule
Hui banwari, hui sanwari,
Piya Banwari…piya banwari
Pi kahan? Pi kahan? Piya, piya bole re…
Piya Banwari…piya banwari.
