Sometimes being good is a curse...

I had an eye exam on Monday.  It was the whole work up - dialation, pressure check, etc etc.  After it was all done, I went to pay the bill and the lady told me the doc instructed her to give me a 20% discount and the final total was $28.  We have piss poor eye insurance, so I thought that it was a great deal.  She swiped my card and I signed the receipt.  Then she mentioned something about next year's appt and that it would be the full appointment with dilation.

I could have just said "OK" and walked out with a huge savings.  Being the good person I am, I had to tell her that THIS appt was the dilation appt and that I wouldn't need one again next year.  She looked at me, and was ALMOST going to tell me I was wrong when I leaned a little closer to her and opened my eyes wide so she could see I was dilated.  Then she said she was going to have to re-do the billing part.  That turned into another 5-10 minute affair.  She finally figured it out and swiped my card again for an additional $170 or so.

Then something else happened that she needed the office manager for.  The office manager came over and figured it out.  Apparently, after all that, the lady STILL hadn't charged me right and there was another $20-$30 in charges.  However, the office manager decided that I'd been through enough already and gave me what she called "the Nancy discount" - which meant she cancelled them and let me go with the $200 they'd already hit me up for.  I think she made the right customer service call, and I'm totally satisfied she did.

I have no doubt I could have gotten away with a $28 visit and that my being a good (or at least honest) person cost me $170, but I still have no regret in doing it.  HOWEVER, I think I would have been happier overall if I would have not paid the extra cash.
