The DC Comics Relaunch
Honestly, I turn my back for a few months to move home and what happens? Skulduggery, that's what. I'm just thinking I must catch up with Dick and the gang and the next thing I know I'm staring down the barrel of a reboot. DC comics is relaunching. Fifty-two titles will survive the purge and they will all clock in at #1. To say that my jaw hit the carpet would be silly. It smashed through the flooring and landed in the car park.
How do you all feel about this? Has this been coming on for a while? I've been more or less off the grid for months so it was a total shock.
I'm trying not to panic, but I can't help but begin to mourn for all the characters I know and love who will be plucked, squashed into new costumes and de-aged. Does this mean personality transplants for any of them? Will Damian still be my gorgeous little fucker? Will Dick be isolated from the others and screwed over yet again? What about everything he's achieved this last year? I'm so proud of how far he's come and, what, that was all bollocks? It never happened? Will he get on with Damian? Was Tim ever Robin? Where's Steph? WHERE'S WALLY?!?!?!
Obviously I will give the relaunch a damn good try. I'm such a slut when it comes to new stuff so I'm sure to be down with a lot of it, but I'm terribly concerned and also a bit peeved. Was there any point in keeping up with DC's storylines for the last five years? I just can't get over that none of it happened, that Dick was never Batman. I don't know why that's bugging me in particular but it is. I'm curious to know how everyone's past happened, especially characters like Jason and Damian, but I would be happier if this was a multiverse-style glitch and not something that looks pretty fricking permanent.
I'm overreacting, aren't I? Yeah, I know. It's just I love these characters and this whole world and I'm still in shock that it's all changing. How can there be no Secret Six? What about Ragdoll? There's no sign of him yet. How can they split up Catman and Deadshot???? I cannot grasp that Gail Simone will not be writing the Secret Six any more. That is an utter tragedy. And I'd only just got back into the Teen Titans.
It's not all bad, though (I hope). I'm very excited about Deathstroke, STORMWATCH (OMFGYES MY FAV WILDSTORM COMIC EVAH!), Grifter and Wonder Woman. I always hoped Dick would one day go back to being Nightwing, but I'll wait to see wtf they've done to him before I start smiling about that one. So help me, if they've disturbed a hair on his head ...
