camp director woot
i had a very long day today and so this is going to be short before i collapse into a cool bath with a cool amount of whiskey. (or tequila. or whatever.) i am the ONLY director at my camp this year which means that everything will be run my way and i will be completely in charge. this make me actually look forward to camp.
and, because it is my new favorite thing, here is a transcript of the speech vincent gave at the wedding reception. he is the best husband in the world.
"If you were a complete stranger I would tell you this:
Molly E don’t take shit from no one.
In fact, she loves a fight. I have seen this girl go toe to toe
with a prison guard in a Massachusetts second hand clothing store.
Bitch out cashiers. Flip off and flip out on the road.
She works for the city Y and she kicks and she bites
and will throw things in your general direction if she is so inclined.
Works fast. Moves in quick. Relentless. Tenacious.
Gets bored easily. Stands up against it.
Hates ignorance
and group work..
Molly and I have known each other for ten years.
My algebra desk was covered in her hair
and she agreed to fill in the word bubbles of the comics I drew.
Later she would send post twice a week
from hundreds of miles away
She writes fearlessly and effortlessly
and her words can crackle and cut you up
and her handwriting looks
better than certificates
and finer than the endnotes on a BestBuy receipt
and she still gives something up for Lent
and still loves YA lit
and still reminds me that it’s 35 through here
and speaks to me in Dutch
and sings to songs I didn’t know she knew
and makes up twice as many
and rubs my ear in the car
and still writes me notes
in a shared language that is vast
and strange and old
and fun
and a little bit dangerous,
like a ball pit.
And she can change into a burrito or a gremlin or a geography bee contestant
And She is a good kisser.
Molly listens to long rants that go nowhere and likes
getting references and postulating on shifts in cultural favor.
She reads as many books as I make drawings
and she is soft and loves to make lists
and everyday that she doesn’t surprise me I’m either astounded or not paying attention.
And She doesn’t mind
being drawn at diners
or having her photos shot
in secret hotels
or abandoned laundry mats
and she sits with me in studio
even after her special studio chair is stolen.
And holds me in regard second only to Hello Kitty,
which says a lot.
And our four astonished eyes
have seen many things no one else has,
and she’s the only one I want because
wherever we go feels like home
as long as we’re together.
I love Molly E. Kane and I’m incredibly fortunate to say
She loves me back...and she loves a fight.
And that’s what this is, the biggest fight of my life.
And I’m ready to go,
toe to toe
heel to heel
hip to hip
and hand in hand,
for the rest of my life."
