My costume for Gencon is one step away from being finished. Maybe two. I'm actually a little surprised that I really went through with making it. I tried it on tonight and it seems to work just fine. It's a little uncomfortable, but should be fine. I may take a change of clothes in the car in case I just get too uncomfortable. My costume is just a generic Japanese catgirl.
I have a traditional yukata that was made for me while I was in Japan. I have decided to wear that as the "outfit" part. I love my yukata. My tutor's mother made it for me. It's the only piece of clothing I have ever had that was made for my exact dimensions. I wore it once to a tea ceremony and two of my Japanese friends helped me put it on. That was about 3 years ago! Anyways, it took me about 30 minutes of swearing and fussing, but I was able to put it on by myself and get everything tied correctly. Well...it's not super correct since my waist is much larger than most Japanese women, so my obi and belts don't go as far around as they should. So my yukata is what I'm wearing as the main part of my costume. I'm excited about that.
To accessorize, I have made cat ears (huzzah for glue guns!), a tail (yet to be stuffed with batting because I forgot to buy batting), and some furry cuffs for my arms (and possibly my feet). The ears look pretty rough if you look at them up close, but if you stand back they are kind of cute. I went with big ears so they will stand out. I have no idea how the tail is going to turn out. I'm assuming it will also be cute once I get a chance to stuff it. I have to figure out how to tie it on, but with three different belts...I'm sure I will find something. I just need to make sure it's not heavy so it won't pull out the little under belt (koshi-himo to be precise) out where you can see it. I hope to stuff the tail tomorrow.
I also bought some cheapy cheap flip-flops from K-Mart. These were a pretty good find because they are foam that is supposed to look like wood with a thong that looks like a friendship bracelet. The colors match my yukata. Nice! They were only $7.00, too. I wore them to work today and they were pretty comfortable.
So, that's my costume. It's definitely a "first timer" costume. You can tell when you get up close. Everything is a bit wonky. Hopefully I get the courage to actually wear it on Friday or Saturday during Gencon. Wish me luck. And confidence. Maybe confidence is more important. :)
