How do you all feel about the treatment of women in the Suits canon so far? I know we don't have much to discuss yet, but I think it's important to keep it in mind as the show progresses.

What I like, so far, is that the women are depicted as smart, capable and clever. In shows with Genius Characters, all too often, women mostly stand around Not Understand but In Awe Of his intelligence. However, here, the women are not only unimpressed by the Genius Character, but they are also better equipped to survive.

I also really like that the head of the firm is a woman (a woman of color, at that!). While Jessica recognizes that Harvey is a Special Snowflake, she still doesn't buy a lot of his shit. My only fear is that she will become a useless authority figure - brought in only to show how much Harvey doesn't care about the rules.
(Think Cuddy from the show House. Most episodes go like this:
House: I will do this thing.
Cuddy: No.
House: I will still do this thing.
Cuddy: Why?
House: Because you are dumb and I am right.
Cuddy: Oh, look! I am dumb and you are right.
SCENE)

ANYWAY. Thoughts?

You're right, in so many shows, the women are portrayed so despicably. For example, I love Supernatural to bits, but it's the men of SPN that I dig, and not because I'm sexist of women. They are just badly characterized and often damsels in distress - like, I seriously HATE Lisa, the woman Dean dates the longest, because she actually claims a year with a man who was mourning his brother, depressed by their domesticity, and self-medicating himself with copious amounts of alcohol, was the BEST year of her life. I CAN'T EVEN! I don't like that because it actually offends my feminist sensibilities, that a woman has to need a man to be happy. So far, in Suits, all the female characters are self-motivated and kind of badass. I hope they stay that way, because while Cuddy was initially alright, now she does annoy me with how much of a rug she is for House to walk all over. :/

I agree with you completely, man. It would be seriously heartbreaking if they went and ruined cool characters with such great potential. Even more so, since Gina Torres is still, and will forever be, Zoe in my head, and she was so incredibly badass in Firefly. To go and make her character in Suits less than useless would be criminal.

USA seems to do a pretty good job of not doing that in their shows, though. Chief Vick in Psych doesn't seem to take any shit if she knows it'll end badly, and Elizabeth and Diana in White Collar are both wonderfully awesome. I really like Joan so far in Covert affairs- she seems to stick to her guns and doesn't seem easily manipulated, and of course, Fiona in Burn Notice could be a definite role model (except for, you know, all the illegal weapons, explosives, and various criminal acts).

I think that USA is pretty good about female characters, as there have been some good ones. Fiona from Burn Notice and Diana from White Collar are two of my favorite female characters ever.

I agree that USA has been pretty good about strong female characters. I really enjoy Divya from 'Royal Pains' and think I will enjoy her even more as she grows and matures as a truly independent woman now that her 'apron-strings' i.e. the cushion of her parents's wealth has been denied her.

I'm also liking so far the introduction of Dr. Danny Santino from 'Necessary Roughness' and am eager to see more of her show as well.

I agree with everything you've said. I think that's why with all of the female characters, I think Rachel is the most balanced (with what we've seen so far). She's strong, smart, and retains a "feminine" quality. Too often do we have women in shows that end up having to act like men in order for other characters to like her. I'm really interested in Donna- she seems so funny and able to put up with Harvey's bull more than anyone else.

And I agree with you about Gina Torres' character. Yeah, as the show progresses, I hope Jessica retains her strength and wit. Maybe even develop her character a bit more.
And if she becomes Cuddy, I think I'll stop watching. (Did I even say that?)

THIS. Seriously, everyone here has already voiced all my opinions! I'm so glad that this was brought up and so early in the thread as well.
