aka In Which Donna and Harvey Are Uncharacteristically Sweet and Mike Insists It Is Just Allergies

Donna notices it first. Mike’s cheeks are flushed and there is a sheen of sweat along his hairline. But he is acting like normal and the only other thing that is off about him is the fact that he keeps clearing his throat. Donna writes it off as allergies for the cough and Mike’s bike ride into work for the flush, but tells herself she’ll keep an eye on him for the rest of the day.

By lunch, Mike’s flush has spread across his cheeks and there is a small sweaty patch at the base of his back. His cough is worse and he keeps sniffling and now even Harvey is starting to pick up on the fact that his associate is sick. But Mike insists he is fine, drops off the briefs he’s finished, and goes back to his desk. Donna shoots Harvey a look through the window, a look that he returns with one of his own.

By mid afternoon, Mike looks like he’s going to fall over. It’s clear that the “allergies” from this morning are actually a cold and Mike looks miserable, even as he tells everyone that he’s okay, really, it’s just allergies. But his voice is scratchy and Donna can almost hear his breath rattling around in his lungs. She didn’t even think colds could get so bad so fast, but then she remembers that Mike has been keeping himself alive on Red Bull, hot dogs, and those cookies Donna had made almost a week ago, so his immune system is pretty much shot to hell.

At eight o’clock, Donna realizes it’s been a few hours since she’d seen her puppy. She’s used to the two of them staying late, sneaking into Harvey’s apartment late at night to curl themselves around her. Those nights usually lead to mornings where she lets them sleep a little longer in the morning, setting the coffee maker for a later time. But Harvey has no cases tonight and he’s already packing up to go home. This is usually the time when Mike bounds up, ready to pick up dinner for three so they can go home.

But he’s not here and Harvey is locking up his office and Donna’s computer has just completed its shut down. “Mike?” Harvey asks, giving her a quizzical look. She shrugs her shoulders and grabs her bag, standing gracefully before coming around to link arm with Harvey’s. There’s really only one place where their third would be, so they both head to the associate’s quarters.

They find Mike slumped over his desk, a highlighter hanging from the fingers of his right hand, his left acting as a pillow for his face. Donna’s reaction is part disgust at the drool sliding out of Mike’s mouth and part exasperation that the young man had let his illness get this far. Harvey’s reaction is one of regret that he hadn’t noticed how worn down his associate and boyfriend had gotten. Mike snores slightly, his breath a wheeze as he fidgets uncomfortably.

Quietly, Donna bends down and rests a hand on Mike’s forehead, flinching when she realized he was burning up. “Wake up, puppy,” she says and runs her other hand down his spine, smirking when he shudders even in his sleep. But then his whole body shivers again and it’s clear that it’s not because of her hand. “Mike,” she calls a little louder and grimaces when he jerks awake and goes straight into a coughing fit.

Harvey’s already gathered Mike’s things, but he takes a moment to rest a hand on Mike’s back, rubbing small, soothing circles. Both Harvey and Donna are being uncharacteristically sweet tonight, but they’ve both noticed how hard Mike’s been working and Donna’s noticed how bad he’s gotten throughout the day. And later on they’ll just blame their kindness on the fact that Mike rubs off on them.

Mike’s finally awake but his eyes are glassy and he sways when he stands. Donna guides him to the elevators with a hand to the small of his back and tries not to move away when he clings to her and nuzzles his face into her hair and neck. She makes a mental note to have Harvey get cold medicine and Vitamin C and lots of orange juice. She’s too pretty to get sick. She ignores the light touch of Harvey’s fingers brushing over Mike’s neck and leads the younger man into the elevator.

He’s mumbling into her skin, something about briefs and a case for Frodo Baggins and Donna shoots a look over the top of his head to Harvey. She’s worried but she’s not about to show it, but Mike has gotten so sick in such a small amount of time that it has become a concern. They step out of the elevator, Harvey guiding this time and doing a terrible job of hiding his distaste of having a very sick and possibly contagious associate clinging to him.

Harvey gives the cabbie the address to their apartment and leans back into the seat, allowing Mike to curl into his side and stroking a hand in Mike’s hair. He and Donna haven’t spoken much since leaving the building, the guilt of not taking care of their boy creating something palpable between them. Harvey knows Donna figured something was wrong because Donna knows everything, but Harvey prides himself on reading people and he hadn’t noticed something was off with his associate until it was too late.

Mike snuffles into Harvey’s neck, his skin burning and his face flushed. Donna has a hand twined with Mike’s, running a soothing thumb over the skin there. It takes a few minutes, but they get Mike out of the cab and onto the sidewalk when they get to the apartment. The doorman gives them a sympathetic look as Harvey pays the fare and Donna shoots him a grateful look as they make their way to the private elevator.

Mike is slowly losing all will to stand on his own so Harvey props him up on the back wall and then stretches his back out. Mike’s eyes are closed and he is breathing heavily and Harvey feels a pang of something in his chest at the sight of the two people he cares for most in the world.

“Hey, rookie,” he mutters and Mike struggles to open his eyes. “Why didn’t you go home?”

Mike shrugs his shoulders tiredly and mumbles something Harvey can’t hear. But Donna can and she shoots Harvey a look that says he’s in danger of sleeping on the couch. “What was that, kid?” Harvey asks again.

Mike clears his throat and brings a hand up to rub at his eyes. “Didn’t wanna dis’point you.”

The elevator pings and the doors open into the loft and this time it’s both Harvey and Donna who lead Mike out, taking a hold of both his hands and leading him into the bedroom. It doesn’t take long for them to get him out of his shoes and his suit and soon he’s left in a pair of mismatched socks and boxers. He’s shivering as Donna prods him to get under the covers and he whimpers when he hits the cool sheets. “’M fine,” he mutters, like he’s just now realizing his two lovers are fussing over him. “’S just allergies.”

“Allergies, my pert behind,” Donna mutters, pulling the covers over Mike’s shoulders, tucking him in. Harvey comes back from the bathroom, a glass of water and cold medicine in his hands that he immediately gives to Mike. The younger man has trouble swallowing the pills at first, but with Donna propping him up, he takes the medicine with minimal trouble.

Harvey smoothes a hand over Mike’s brow, ignoring the heat coming from his skin, and tucks the covers tighter around the boy. Mike is still trembling and his brow is furrowed as he tries to find a comfortable position. He’ll sleep more soundly when Donna and Harvey are finally in bed with him.

Donna changes and washes up first, sauntering out of the bathroom fresh faced and in one of Harvey’s button downs. She gives Harvey the go ahead to use the bathroom and wanders into the kitchen after checking on Mike who is sleeping fitfully. She heats up leftovers from the night before and dishes it out onto two plates just in time for Harvey to wander out, his sleep pajamas slung low on his hips. His hair is damp from his quick shower and messier than she’s ever seen it.

He takes the plate from her and presses a kiss to her lips, sighing into her mouth as she yields beneath him. The day had been relatively stress free but the guilt and regret of not noticing that Mike was sick has exhausted the both of them.

“We should get him to eat something,” Donna says, standing to find something light to feed to their boyfriend. “Don’t we have soup somewhere?”

Harvey gathers their plates and drops them into the sink, turning back to find Donna reaching for a can of soup, his shirt riding up the back of her thighs. Any other night and he’d have her pinned to the counter, but he already knows she’d just push him away. Their puppy is most important right now so Harvey just runs a hand over his face and adjusts his sleep pants.

“Just leave him for now,” he says, taking the can from Donna and setting it on the counter. “Let him sleep.” He lets her wrap her arms around his waist, pulling her into his chest and pressing a kiss to the crown of his head.

“Shoulda sent him home at lunch,” she mutters into his bare chest.

“He wouldn’t have gone,” he replies and she snorts because she knows it’s true. Mike’s almost as stubborn as the both of them.

They hold each other a few moments more before their embrace is interrupted by a harsh cough from the bedroom. Donna moves first and her bare feet pad against the hardwood as she makes her way to the back of the apartment. Harvey takes a moment to put the dishes in the dishwasher and then flicks the lights off as he makes his way out of the kitchen.

Donna has already climbed into bed with Mike who has wrapped himself around her and has his head resting on her shoulder. His breathing is heavy and he is sweating slightly so Harvey grabs a wet washcloth to set on his forehead. He ignores the way Mike’s brow furrows again and just keeps the cloth pressed to his lover. Donna runs her fingers through Mike’s unruly hair and smiles when Mike settles at the touch, sighing in contentment at the repetitive motion.

Harvey finally climbs into bed, pressing himself against Mike’s back. He knows Mike loves human contact and he would never deny his associate that, especially now. He lets Mike grab his hand and pull it over him, resting on Donna’s stomach. It’s their usual nightly position, but tonight it feels different. Tonight it feels complete.

Mike’s fever breaks in the middle of the night, the sweat pouring off of him enough to wake Donna and Harvey. He’s practically unconscious as Harvey lifts him from the bed so Donna can change the sheets, but at least he’s no longer burning up. When he’s settled back in the bed, Harvey removes his shirt and Donna changes his boxers, but the young man is back to sleep in moments.

Donna and Harvey climb back into bed, thankful that their puppy is getting better and that they don’t have to be at work in the morning. Mike sighs as he curls into Harvey’s side, tangling his legs with Donna’s.

His fever is slightly back in the morning when Donna wakes up, but its low enough that she is no longer concerned. She gets him a glass of water and he’s awake enough to hold it himself this time and take his own pill. Harvey is still asleep so Mike lays his head on his chest and sighs. Donna leans over and presses a kiss to Mike’s temple, smiling into his hair when he mumbles a soft “Love you.”

She makes a pot of coffee though she knows that Harvey won’t be awake for another hour and Mike not even get out of bed today. Her suspicions are confirmed when Harvey stumbles in almost an hour and a half later, pillow marks on his face and his hair an utter mess.

“The octopus we call a boyfriend has turned into a furnace,” he says, his voice thick with sleep.

“That’s called a fever, darling,” Donna retorts, leaning her head back so Harvey can give her a kiss. “And be thankful it’s lower than it was last night.” Harvey just grunts as he pours himself a cup of coffee and leans against the counter.

They’re just starting the new Star Trek for the eighth time when Mike stumbles out, the comforter wrapped around his shoulders and eyes still half closed. “Morning, sunshine,” Donna chirps and Mike frowns slightly as he makes his way to the couch.

“You left,” he pouts as he burrows farther into the blankets and leans into Donna. He feels the same as he did yesterday and he’s vaguely aware that he has a fever and should probably be in bed. But being sick means he needs comfort and while Donna and Harvey normally aren’t great at comfort, they’d been doing a great job last night and he’d like to have that again.

He rubs his face against Donna’s shoulder and feels Harvey drape an arm around his shoulders and they all sink further into the couch. This is what Mike needs, the human contact that comes with being with the people you love and he’s lucky enough to have two people.

He falls asleep before Kirk makes it on to the Enterprise.

END

These three have become like a new OT3 and they just make me want to write all of the things.

Omg.
O.M.G.
I didn't even know I loved this until I read this. My OT3 is Louis/Mike/Harvey but now I'm having second thoughts? Can one have both a het and a slash OT3? Anything goes in fandom, yeah?

So, so amazing, dearest author.

OP here, and this is so, so sweet, and pretty much exactly what I wanted. Then again I want all the Mike/Harvey/Donna, so I guess I'm biased, lol. But this was great, and totally adorable. Poor sick puppy, but he's got two people to take care of him :)

Uh Mod... do we warn for threesomes? Or at least shouldn't author disclose pairing if any? This kinda blindsided me.

Re: Fill: Take Care (1/3) rories October 12 2011, 07:47:22 UTC
The pairing is clearly in the header for the prompt.

Also, why would a warning for a threesome be necessary? It's not a common trigger, which is the purpose of the required warnings, and the idea of having to warn for it stigmatizes consensual, healthy poly relationships.

(not the author, just anon who saw this on flat view and was blindsided by the suggestion of a warning..)

I think I love you, anon. Why in the world would a consensual relationship between legal adults need to be warned for?

No. We don't warn for threesomes. In regards to headers if the story included a trigger then it must be warne for in the header other than that the header for this fill is fine the way it is.
