I haven't talked about art in a while, so now I will! I'm having scheduling issues...

The other day after my class, I was planning on going to Scott Sherk and Kevin Tuttle's art presentations instead of wind ensemble. My art teacher now, Fletcher, recommended we go but decided not to give us a writing assignment on it. In class though, in ENGLISH, my professor told us to go to it! Somehow things like that still strike me as odd thanks to Shore Reg. but to my surprise, TONS of people were there! Art majors from the senior class I recognized and some even said hi to me! (I helped them with their photo class for work study) And other majors/minors too along with Rachel from my last art class who I haven't seen lately.

The work was all based on the figure, which in the end depressed me because I feel like I could never draw (or sculpt) like that because I haven't had any experience in it... That's why I need this drawing class. Some of the sketches they did were amazing, even if they didn't look like complete works of art. They served their purpose by demonstrating perspective and shape and in Sherk's work - line. He did a figure drawing in all tiny straight lines - the minimun necessary to still make it look like a woman. Pretty amazing. I also know nothing about sculpture, but I saw Shannon there and she told me a lot about it. She's an art minor and taking sculpture now. That's a class I need to take sooner rather than later...

After, they set out food for the viewers. While eating empanadas (everyone thought they were pierogies - which i still don't like that much. People here LOVE them - it's a PA thing.) I got to talk to Prof. Gross about my work-study job. She thought she could use me and the other girl who helps her at the same time, so we don't get bored and we could help each other. I told her I'm all for that!! I think we'll be working Wed afternoon/night and maybe some time on the weekend. She's getting back to us.

I also spoke to Amy Cologuari from Shore - she knows I'm interested in Spanish, and she's a Spanish major, so I was surprised when it wasn't the first thing she brought up. Eventually it came up in conversation when she said she's studying abroad. She's a junior, so it ends up she's going to Seville, Spain over the summer. SUMMER! I asked her if it would be really hot then, and she answered, "Oh yeah. Like 100 degrees. *pause* In the shade." I'd pass out, and I told her so. She laughed, but didn't explain why she chose summer. Maybe so she could stay at Muhlenberg. But she said if I ever went to go (especially if I went to Seville, which isn't as big a city as Madrid) to go in Spring because they have an amazing Easter tradition. I actually remember reading about it - there's a parade as the main event, and the celebration lasts all week...and I don't remember anything else. But it was cool to talk to her about. I also told her about Mexico.

The other people I spoke with were Barnes (painting teacher) who came back to see the exhibit and talked to me and Rachel. Not too much to say - I told him about my class now and he said he's having a great time off. Getting a lot of work done.

Then Beth (art department secretary) came over and I talked to her! She was in a really good mood - very bouncy. So I talked about much of the same stuff with classes, but she wanted to know about my other classes too - and once I mentioned math, every artist's fear, she went into a whole story about how she went to Catholic school and hated it and doodled over her homework ^_^ So she continued with saying how I have a full schedule with 5 classes, and I started mentioning how I feel I'm doing less art-related activity as of late. But it does make sense since last semester I had 2 studio art classes and this time I have one. Beth said it's a BIG difference, and that it's ok.

I have to admit, I've been worrying about not doing enough with art. And though I have only 1 class, I should be doing more on my own time. It's true. I'm carrying that sketchbook with me everywhere lately, but it's hard because I CAN'T draw people and that's what surrounds me all the time! I'm going to Lauren's room tomorrow and sketching her plant because I'm out of nature ideas already! Beth said this class will be great in the spring, when we can sit outside, but until then, I could do man-made objects for practice I suppose. I sketched my lamp on my desk...

Until then I'm seriously considering cutting things out of my schedule. It's hard to do...

I am also going to email OCDP about an intern at the Allentown Art Museum. I know nothing else about it other than I want to once a week.

What I won't cut -
Art Association (obviously- the only art club on campus) We're preparing for Art Week in April right now.

Flute Ensemble - I was so proud the other night that I had the opening melody to a song, even though I was 4th flute. I know I'll do really well in that group and I love Elaine. That's why if I ever do stop wind ensemble, I would do flute lessons instead.

SEVEN - whether I like it or not, even if I'm not a religion major/minor this is my favorite club I'm involved in.

SHARE - the community serive group. Doesn't take up that much time right now and it's very sporadic - you come or you can't. No biggie. The number of kids involved in this is amazing because of how many branches there are. Right now Caring Place is what fits in my schedule. Maybe next year I could do Casa Guadalupe with Spanish children or there is JFK - where they need people to help with arts and crafts. So I continue this for future resume help.

Campus Delegates - I still want another person to stay over people!!!!!

I'm proud I figured all that out as I waited for the gallery to open this afternoon. Art fun. Art eye-openers. Art people. Art stress. MORE Art time.
