Its kind of official. The rights to Hyperion have been snapped up by Warner Bros.

Honestly, this news makes me ecstatic and unhappy all at the same time. Happy that its might finally go before the cameras. Unhappy because they plan to collapse the first two books into a single feature.

Over the last 18 years, I've been evangelizing this book to everyone I know who exhibits even a modicum of interest in sci-fi. I've successfully "converted" over 30 people, not counting those to whom I recommended the book while I was a store manager at Crown Books in Orange County, CA. You know, sci-fi geeks who might spend a few hours discussing the **perfect** cast, which plots lines could be cut, which were indispensible. So...yeah...I'm fairly excited.

But it still leaves me with a fair amount of ambivalence. Yeah, the people involved look like they've still got a fair amount of indie-street-cred. An array of folks who **might** be more interested in the richness of the plot, the diversity of the characters, the metaphor and parallels to our own current society. Still....Warner Bros.

Well, I guess they've been doing ok by Batman. If any production company is going to bring this to the screen, it may as well be them.
