So I'm walking down this hallway carrying some make and manufacture of anti-personnel weapon. I'm sure that I'm wearing fairly hefty body armor, looking formidable in camo and a thick helmet. I'm loaded up with grenades, sticky bombs and a rail gun which sublimates the flesh from my enemies bones. I'm loaded for bear...but...

But the fact remains...I'm scared of a little girl in a red dress.

F.E.A.R. scares the shit out of me. I'm not afraid to say it. I dread playing it. I dread turning off the flashlight while navigating cramped ventilation ducts because...more than once...that same little girl in the red dress can just be made out in the shadows crawling quickly toward me. At one point, she pops up and the room explodes around her, blowing me out of a window and into the courtyard out side.

I dread it. Every half hour or so, I have to stop playing. Exit, read some FARK, and after about 10 or so minutes of calming down, I'm ready to get back into the game.

Must be coz I'm always playing at night. Wearing headphones. With the lights turned off.

It doesn't really compete with Half Life 2 because of F.E.A.R.s complete lack location variety. There's only so much interest that can be generated whilst wandering the same office complex for four hours straight. Air duct ---> concrete hallway ---> warehouse ---> power plant ---> sewer ---> air duct. Wash rinse repeat.

But hey, did I mention its scary?

Holy shit...is it ever.
