Nintendo impulse buys

I bought "Ultimate Angler" for the 3DS Mii Plaza.

Pre-play Impression:
I might want to play this, but I will definitely buy it because I have an existing Nintendo E-shop balance, and equally important is that (according to a sales bunny) there is a virtual aquarium feature.

Also, I almost never own games as they are released.

The guide said I should practice here. Damn it. I hate practicing to get better at something.

Press 'A' when the bobber sinks, wind the reel with the joystick. Okay, I managed to land a 3.68 inches sardine. The sardine model looks decent, not cartoon-y. Second catch (using a different kind of bait) is a 5.86" black rockfish.

Mixing bait is important for catching larger fish, according to the game. I am suspicious of this. Following instructions I mash all the kinds of bait together creating "jumbo bait" which looks like a colorful beach ball. The reward for my Herculean effort is a 25.07" Japanese sea bass. The guide helps me reel it in, which being difficult enough I guess would be impossible without assistance?

Back to the clubhouse where my "new finds" are reviewed. Apparently they are all grade D fish, and not enough to increase me beyond Rank 1. (Total: 189/240 points) But no one can take away my meager accomplishments! I also was awarded 320G which I'm going to assume 1. is gold or some standard, ocean currency, and 2. my money can definitely be taken away.

Guidebook
This reviews my catches thus far, 3 species and a progress of 1%. Several filters are available for sorting the fish, which is nice. There is only limited information about each fish displayed. This does include how much G they are worth, though.

Progresses the story with the kawaii fishing guide. She alludes to legendary monsters I should be trying to catch. This does fit in with what I know of Japan, to include giant, radioactive monsters which fight each other, and also catching every darn thing in the ocean until they're satisfied. Hopefully there is a hidden bonus level themed off "The Cove" (2009).

Anyway, I lost my cooler tackle box overboard because what appeared to be a megalodon tapped the boat. I will have my revenge. This I swear.

Coraline's dad shows up, which makes me wonder whether or not I am an orphan in this scenario? Either way, he's a big ichthyology nerd who freely admits to blogging about fishing legends.

I don't know what's more nerdy and pathetic than that.

After ranting about his life story, the guide's dad leaves. He makes an enigmatic promise that if I catch the big fish he can make it worth my while.

What the Hell does this guy know? He seems to know my name, but nothing else about me. Seriously, what other incentive could you provide to a fisherman greater than catching some ridiculous-sized fish? Damn eggheads, they presume too much.

Anyhow, the guide ditches me at my quaint, island hotel and the intro is over.

Huh. Adjusting the 3D depth at the Ultimate Angler menu re-arranges the stars in the sky. The extraneous detail is appreciated.
