Title
Increase username length restriction from 15 to 25 characters

Short, concise description of the idea
Change the restriction on username length so that users can create accounts, communities, and syndicated feeds that have names up to 25 characters long.

Full description of the idea
There are numerous suggestions regarding deleting unused/old accounts, free renames, and the difficulty of finding a good username. Extending the username length limit to 25 should alleviate some pressure and allow more people to find a name that they like.

A patch is available from Dreamwidth: http://bugs.dwscoalition.org/show_bug.cgi?id=149
An ordered list of benefits
  • Less name conflict
  • Happier customers
  • Existing patch eases implementation.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Dreamwidth made the change before the site was fully operational, when their userbase was in the dozens rather than the millions. It may not be possible anymore to make such a change here.
  • I'm not sure what effect this would have on database performance/storage.
  • Complaints from users angry that they were subject to a limitation that has changed.
