Title
Create "Default view" friends group for all users
Short, concise description of the idea
Create "Default view" friends group for all users to simplify adding a friend or community without putting that friend/community on their friends page.
Full description of the idea
There have been plenty of suggestions in the past (
http://community.livejournal.com/suggestions/828802.html and
http://community.livejournal.com/suggestions/646687.html for example), as well as many support requests that boil down into
"Hey, this is my idea/problem!"
"You can already do that, just utilize the Default view with your custom friends groups."
"Oh."
These people don't know about the existence of custom groups let alone to what ends they could be employed. Part of the reason is that, until you specifically seek out the FAQs pertaining to them (
http://www.livejournal.com/support/faqbrowse.bml?faqid=102), custom groups are mostly invisible to users.
Currently, if a user has no friends groups specified, they are only given an option to chose friend colors when adding a new friend. Users who have friends groups, even if it's only Default view, are also presented with "Include in one or more custom friends groups" (which currently is unchecked). (Edit: Ignore that bit - see comments below.)
What I propose is that all users are given a friend group called "Default view" and that, if this is the only group, when adding a friend that it is checked by default. (Edit: Ignore that bit, that functionality is already present.) If the users has many groups, including Default view, leave them all unchecked as is currently the case. (Edit: Ignore that bit, I'd only intended to leave the functionality the same and didn't realize I was the victim of a bug.)
Also, the add a friend page should include a link to the appropriate FAQs to help users learn what friend groups are and how they can be used. In addition it should probably be re-worded so as to be less confusing to users who only have the one group.
An ordered list of benefits
- Introduce users to the custom friends group feature.
- Simplify the "I trust this person to read my friends-locked entries but I don't want to read their entries" workflow.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
- Addition of new checkbox on add a friend page may be confusing, especially at first.
