Title
Gravatar Support

Short, concise description of the idea
Setup support for Gravatars in commenting, notably for OpenID users.

Full description of the idea
A gravatar is a "globally recognized avatar", as is explained on their website at http://www.gravatar.com. A user creates an account there and links it with a specific email address. LiveJournal can then take an email address associated with an OpenID account and check to see if a Gravatar is available for that email address. The Gravatar can then be used as the OpenID account's userpic
An ordered list of benefits
  • Fewer images to host
  • Someone else's bandwidth, to a degree.
  • Follows along with the ideals behind OpenID, which LiveJournal has always supported.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Not particularly useful for people who have LiveJournal accounts already
  • Coding, coding, coding.
  • If Gravatar's website goes down, icons don't show.

userpics, external services, external services: other sites, openid, § no status
