Comparing community membership and friend-of is completely erroneous, they're not comparable entities at all. It's you yourself who choses which comms you're a member of, not someone else. If you are scared to be seen as a member of a certain comm then get a dummy account, it's very easy. And free too.

Agreed. An additional account is free. You have total control over what communities you join, what interests you list, and who you choose to tell about your journal.

Dude, you've changed your username! I recognised the usericon but the name was all wrong :-)

A few weeks ago. This is the name I've always wanted and the name I mostly use online. It's just not been available.

It's a bit of a pain signing in and out though - this way is an easy alternative that's optional.

But it's still contrary to the way the friends and friend-of lists work. Not to mention lulling people into a false sense of security because their names will still show up on the comm's userprofile.

Perhaps using the 'friend of' list has taken the emphasis away from the idea.
I should have said you can hide it so readers dont have to know ALL your interests if you wish to hide them!

But the point is that the only way to really hide anything is to not add it in the first place. There are ways to let you see someone's hidden friend-of list for example and your name will still show up on the comm's userprofile even if you hide it on your own.

For regular LJ users that is true - they could find the community by accident or by doing a search if they really wanted to.

But it wouldn't be immediately obvious.
I was thinking more that it would be good for people whos family and workmates that read their journal - without the trouble of signing in and out all the time.

But it's still lulling people into a false sense of security. Security through obscurity doesn't work, especially not on the net, and it's definitely not something LJ should encourage people to rely on.
