Surely an unlimited amount would be the only reasonable price to pay? ;)

I would pay whatever it costs. It's a feature that I want, hence, price is not a deciding factor to me. I spend an inordinate amount of time on LJ; I want my user experience to be what I want it to be--and I can't imagine the amount of money would be so high as to scare me away.

Any company that would try to charge $1000 - $5000 for userpics wouldn't be in business very long. You do understand that every business has to operate according to a business model that makes sense in the market place. Obvioously, LJ wouldn't be able to charge more than it would reasonable cost to dedicate one server to one person (an extreme example of resource allocation) -- or did you need for me to state that explicitly?

>>You said that you couldn't imagine the amount of money would be so high as to scare you away;

I couldn't imagine it not because I would pay some ridiculous amount of money not tied to the market or to reality. Obviously, no one would pay a million dollars for userpics. What I said was that I couldn't imagine that LJ could come up with a pricing scheme that would scare me away. Implicit in that is that the pricing scheme would be based on the market, on an amount comensurate to the delivery of service. In all seriousness, if it *cost* LJ something that justified the price range that you asked about, I would certainly consider it. However, since I'm not busy being facetious, I know full well that LJ would not come to the conclusion that $5,000 per person for userpics was based on the market.
