You already can mass-delete -- just check off every "delete" checkbox.

Can do that after the icon count has been reduced to the non paid number? I think that's what's being asked for here.

I ... believe so! I'll double-check, but I'm pretty sure you can delete -- you just can't change keywords or comments.

As far as I have been told, the deactivation is already supposed to pick the most frequently used pics. This should have been the case for a long time. (I know it was broken years ago: it has since been claimed fixed.)

Activate/deactivate wouldn't work, if it were available all the time. In that case people could just activate at a whim when they want to use a particular pic.

It picks the most frequently-used userpics and your default, based on your entries in your journal.

Does that mean it basically doesn't work for those of us who don't update our journals, or am I misreading your comment?

I think it means it doesn't consider the icons that you use for comments.

I'm pretty sure they want you to pay again. You getting annoyed because you didn't reup your account is all well and good, keep fighting that fight.

Nice assumption, though you're likely wrong (and quite transparently rude and sarcastic about it too to boot). They're just asking for a simple way to do something they have to take a half dozen round about steps to do anyway - and to point out, the long way taxes the LJ system with deleting and possibly re uploading icons when simply the ability to pick the ones they want to keep would be the better and easier choice on any level, so it'd be a win for the user and the system.

wouldn't that be a decreased likelihood of remaining a paid user since the favorite icons aren't in danger?

None of them are in danger, per se- they don't get DELETED, just inactivated. And, chances are, if it's your favorite icon, it'll probably be one of the ones you used most often and, therefore, will remain active.

This is a good idea. (There's no harm in letting someone select which icons they want once, but there would need to be limitations to prevent people from switching out sets of icons.)
