I think you can actually just select the "buy 12 months paid time" thrice to pay for three years at a time.

Would it be obvious on LJ's end that one was trying to purchase multiple years or would they think it was a mistake (like hitting the submit button one too many times)? As to the details, three different transactions would result in three charges to one's card and I think it would be more convenient all round to just have the one transaction and one charge. You're right though, the 'make three separate purchases' way would probably work if this change was never implemented (though I hope it is!) =)

It shows up as three different "items" in your shopping cart before you proceed to checkout, so there is hardly room for confusion. I've done this, only with extra userpics, bought for a total of 14 months in one order, and there was no hazzle about it.

This is the point I was going to make. Although I also agree, in essence, with the original poster that it wouldn't hurt to make it clearer that you can do this sort of thing. I'm generally in favor of making anything clearer and more obvious.

I would like this. I gift paid time to people often, and occassionally (like now, for instance) run contests where paid time in excess of a year is awarded. It'd be more convenient to be able to not have to do multiple smaller increments, unless there's some logistical reason this can't be done (anyone?).

This is a great idea -- I'd love to give my daughters long-term paid accounts as a gift.
