Default setting of the directory should be set to return the search result in simple list mode.

Default setting of the directory should be set to return the search result in simple list mode. This would take some of the load off off the image-server which recently has been lagging behind when calling up LJ-pages (like friends-pages or comments-pages).
An ordered list of benefits

Less load on the Live Journal image-server which hosts the userpictures.

Faster query results (less work making the page)

Easier overview (lists are better).

Some people won't like it that they don't get the userpictures by default, but they can always choose to change the setting :)

Defaulting to the simple format would probably do for most people ?

An organized list, or a few short paragraphs detailing suggestions for implementation

Someone to set a variable to naught instead of one or vice versa (is my guess)...

Now isn't this an easy suggestion to implement ? LOL.
