Title
better commenting interface, dual-window capabilities

Short, concise description of the idea
comments should not require a reload of the page to add or view, and it would be nice to have an integrated friend's real time feed that runs along side whatever you're viewing on LJ

Full description of the idea
The comments feature is really awkward in that it doesn't just update the thread when I make a comment without reloading the entire page, a la facebook or google plus or any system that includes comment features. Additionally, it can be a pain (especially if you follow a lot of people) to have to click to and from someone's individual journal, only to lose your place later in your friend's page. And if I click "reply to an entry", the comment box should appear in my friend's page.
An ordered list of benefits
  • -less likely to lose your comment, if your internet hiccups
-comment confirmation doesn't require a reloaded page
-easier to navigate and comment if you can just unfold threads and comment without reloading the page
-having a friend's page side-bar that you can fold away if necessary makes it so that you don't have to open two windows or lose your place on your friend's page if you decide to read/comment on a friend's entry.
-Some apps already serve this function, but it should be an intrinsic part of the website. Simplicity is key, but a lot of Livejournal is way behind in terms of design and functionality
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • The tendency here would be to charge for these upgrades, but it would actually keep non-paid users engaged more often with LJ, and give more incentive to advertisers. Still, it would have be phased in over time, and have an extensive beta testing period so that users (paid and non-paid) get a chance to give feedback on what works and what doesn't.
