Title
More timely and informative rejections of email to @livejournal.com addresses

Short, concise description of the idea
When LiveJournal decides to reject email sent to a @livejournal.com (whether a user or an internal address like accounts@, webmaster@, etc...), have it do it as soon as it gets the email, and with a link to an explanation of the specific reason for rejecting the email.

Full description of the idea
Currently, LiveJournal doesn't actually reject the emails outright, but says "not accepting it now, try later". Thus, it relies on the sending server to notify the aender when it failed to send it after a few hours (not all do that) and when it finally gives up after 5 days. In addition, its reason for rejecting is uninformative. Here's an example LiveJournal message, followed by the craigslist equivalent.

host mail.livejournal.com[208.93.0.48] said: 450 4.7.1 Client host rejected: cannot find your hostname, [75.145.166.65] (in reply to RCPT TO command)

host mxi7p.craigslist.org[208.82.236.180] said: 554 5.7.1 : Client host rejected:
rDNS/DNS_validation_failed._Please_setup_matching_DNS_and_rDNS_records:_http://www.craigslist.org/about/help/rdns_failure xabd-4 (in reply to RCPT TO command)

The actual reason for the rejection was the same in both cases (this was confirmed to me by LiveJournal ops when I asked for the specifics of what they were testing).
An ordered list of benefits
  • More timely error reports (immediate instead of a few hours at best, and maybe up to 5 days or so)
  • More informative messages, that a sysadmin for the sending site can handle without needing more information
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • None that I can see

paid account email alias, external services, customer service, § no status
