Title
Allow style="" attribute and inline CSS in comments

Short, concise description of the idea
I would like to see the style="" attribute allowed in HTML tags in LJ comments. This tag is used for a variety of things, from color formatting to background images such as sparkletext.

Full description of the idea
The style="" attribut is being stripped out of comment tags prior to their being rendered by a browser. This is extremely disappointing to me because I'm one of the moderators of a collaborative fiction/RP community, and a number of our threads have invested heavily in CSS in order to explore hyperfiction as a medium. The loss of this CSS undermines the hard work and creativity a number of our users have put into their craft.

Information on the effect of this reformatting can be found here: execharmonious.livejournal.com/6518.html

And examples of the artistic uses of this attribute can be found here: adravet.net/misc/btr_misc/stripped_css.html
An ordered list of benefits
  • Allows greater visual creativity in comments
  • Allows exploration of hypertext as a medium
  • Is common currency in internet culture, such as use of sparkletext
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • There are some security concerns, as noted here: vanillaforums.org/discussion/12987/major-htmlawed-security-issues/p1 . However, I propose that a more limited scrubbing could eliminate most of these vulnerabilities, such as scrubbing (universally or selectively) width/height/opacity/z-index/positioning properties within the style="" attribute.
  • It is possible to overdo CSS to make comments into eyesores, but it's also possible to do that by gratuitous abuse of written language, alone.

html cleaner, markup, comments, § no status
