Title
Site modifier in lj user tag

Short, concise description of the idea
Include site modifiers in lj user tags.

Full description of the idea
When we type in username, it would be nice if we could call a username for a site that is non-LJ. For example, on Dreamwidth, while will produce a DW-icon-username, one can put down and get a LJ user instead of a DW user.

I don't want to be one of those "we should copy Dreamwidth" people, but this is one particular feature I like in Dreamwidth that I haven't been able to reproduce in LJ. If this is a stupid suggestion and the way to do this actually exists, I'd appreciate a how-to and apologize in advance for taking up time.

I checked suggestions and found http://community.livejournal.com/suggestions/818610.html but it has a different suggestion. While that suggestion talks about OpenID users already on LJ, I'm talking about linking to people on completely different sites who don't have any LJ-related usernames. [ETA June 30: It turns out dglenn has already written a great write-up here, two years ago!]
An ordered list of benefits
  • Make it convenient for LJ users to link to other users from Insanejournal, Dreamwidth, Inksome, etc.
  • Provide an incentive for LJ users to stay on LJ because of the above convenience.
  • Show that Livejournal is also still a trailblazer on the LJ code base.
An ordered list of problems/issues involved
  • Replacement of core coding (but if DW can do it, why can't LJ?) [ETA June 30: Especially since with the same code base, LJ could just implement DW's code patch...]

lj-specific markup, external services: other sites, § patch available, § no status
