Character: Oerba Dia Vanille
Series: Final Fantasy XIII
Version: Only one!
Age: 519
Gender: Female
Sexuality: ...questionable.
Appearance: Vanille is 5'3" tall with curly red hair (which is usually pulled back into pigtails), pale skin and bright, vivid green eyes. Her dress is a bit...eclectic to say the least. She wears a tropical pink halter top, an orange and yellow skirt, a bear hide (which is tied around her waist) and yellow boots. Additionally, she wears a hoop earring in each ear, bangles on her wrists and bead-work over her collar, chest and waist.
Personality: Despite what one might think upon first meeting her, Vanille is a surprisingly complex person. On the outside, she is bubbly, mischievous and an eternal optimist. She likes for people to see her bubbly front because it helps ease some of the guilt she has amassed over the years. Since Vanille made her promise to protect Cocoon, she has done her best to take on whatever duties she can to help others (though she subscribes to "running away" whenever she can).
Yet, when she's around Fang, Serah and Hope (sometimes), a new side emerges. Deep down, Vanille worries a great deal for those around her (Fang especially). While she isn't outwardly brave and daring like Snow or Lightning, she does feel a strong loyalty to those she loves/empathizes with.
(But it should be noted that she is trying to change her skittish ways. She feels bad for not backing up Fang five hundred years ago and she feels even worse for leaving Fang behind during the Purge; so she is determined to find Fang again and show her a "new" Vanille.
In reality, Vanille is simply learning that her actions affect others. She can't just run away anymore. Or, rather, she can't just run away anymore. She has to stand and fight sometimes. Perhaps her realization is a sign of maturity. If so, then it took her five hundred years to receive her epiphany.)
As a whole, Vanille is a caring, driven person who doesn't let anyone or anything interfere with her Fangfriends or her curiosity. (And she is a highly curious person. In fact, she doesn't pay much attention to anything/anyone else when something/someone has her attention. Poor Hope knows this first-hand.) Underneath all of her flash and flair, however, is an insecure girl who is working through her guilt one day at a time and trying to better herself.
Abilities/Weaponry/Strengths:
Abilities: Vanille can fight with her various Rods (
as seen here) and she can Summon
Hecatoncheir (
Hecatoncheir Gestalt Mode) - though she hasn't done so yet. It's possible that she will be able to figure out how to Summon the Eidolon within the game (if that's okay with the Mods).
Additionally, Vanille can heal her allies (therefore she possesses White Mage abilities).
Weaponry: See Abilities.
Strengths: Vanille's biggest personality strength is her optimism. She has had an obviously dark past, yet she doesn't let that consume her. She puts one foot in front of the other and carries on. While, at times, that can seem callous or careless, the truth is: Vanille does care and she has put a lot of thought into how she should atone for her past mistakes.
Weaknesses: (Physical and mental)
Physical Weaknesses: She isn't as toned and physically powerful as Lightning or Fang. She is fully aware of this - which is why she opts to run away instead of fight so often.
Mental Weaknesses: Doing the right thing and sticking by her friends has been something Vanille has had to learn. After leaving Fang alone five hundred years ago, she has carried around a lot of guilt. Through that burden, she has learned how important it is to stand up and be brave in some situations.
History: Vanille was born in a village called Oerba five centuries before the events of Final Fantasy XIII. Thanks to Cocoon's l'Cie and fal'Cie, Vanille (along with Fang) lost her family. Thus the two ended up at Oerba's Orphanage - where they meet and become best friends rather quickly. Not long afterward, Fang decides to become a l'Cie to protect Vanille and Grand Pulse. Vanille follows in Fang's footsteps so that they can stay together (and she wants to keep an eye on her friend).
When the war reaches its peak, the pair are urged to Summon Ragarnok and destroy Cocoon. However, Vanille is too scared to do so. Fang ends up transforming into an incomplete Ragarnok and leaving a large scar in Cocoon. Yet she is unable to destroy it completely on her own. Unexpectedly, the Goddess takes pity on the war-torn citizens and turns Fang and Vanille into crystals; which, of course, makes it impossible for them to obtain their Focus (i.e. to destroy Cocoon).
Five hundred years later, the pair are finally awoken. Fang doesn't remember their Focus, and Vanille, not wanting to bring up bad memories, pretends that she has forgotten about it too. Yet, once again, Fang wants to protect Vanille from harm. This time, she refuses to just sit and watch while Vanille becomes a Cie'th. Therefore she vows that she will remember their Focus and complete it no matter what.
However, before Fang can follow through on her promise, the pair run across Serah Farron. Vanille notices the l'Cie brand on the girl's arm and assumes that, because she was unwilling to complete her Focus, Serah has been chosen to take her place. Vanille doesn't share any of this with Fang, of course.
A few days later, Fang becomes truly desperate to find their Focus. She, along with Vanille, use stolen ID cards to board a train and travel to Euride Gorge (where the fal'Cie Kujata lives). Fang plans to attack Kujata for information, but Vanille doesn't want her to (for obvious reasons). However, things go awry when Dajh Katzroy interferes with their meeting and ends up getting branded by the fal'Cie.
PSICOM soldiers pursue Vanille and Fang once their presence is detected. Fang moves to fight them in order to let Vanille escape. Vanille, of course, protests, but Fang gives her no choice when she shoves her into an elevator.
After being separated from Fang, Vanille seems...lost. She travels back to Vestige at Bodhum and tries to figure out what she should do next. Fate has a way of intervening, however, and, after scraping her leg on the beach, Vanille finds herself face to face with Serah. She ends up apologizing to the girl for not fulfilling her Focus (and thus putting the burden on Serah's shoulders). Serah doesn't understand, but Vanille finds a new determination to help others.
At Bodhum's annual firework festival, she even wishes for the safety of those on Cocoon. She also decides that she will not destroy Cocoon - even if it means her becoming a Cie'th. Yet, as always, Vanille is not allowed to remain peaceful. The next day, the Sanctum relays that they have discovered the fal'Cie Anima deep within the Vestige and the quarantine of Bodhum. They also announce their plans for the Purge.
Because Vanille doesn't realize that the Purge is a government cover-up, she boards the train along with everyone else and follows the Sanctum's orders. When the train reaches Hanging Edge, Lightning and Sazh derail it, giving everyone a chance to escape. Thanks to Snow Villiers and NORA, Vanille and the rest of the escapees are brought to (relative) safety. However, it soon becomes clear that most of them need to fight in order to keep that safety. When Hope can't stomach handling a weapon and standing side by side with his mother, Vanille steps in for him.
Tragically, she is unable to save Hope's mother when she falls from a broken bridge. But she is able to keep Hope safe. She even repeats some of the words Serah told her about dealing with pain later if it's too hard to bear.
A little while later, the pair (i.e. Vanille and Hope) meet up with the surviving NORA members and end up stealing an air vehicle from Gadot. They crash land in Pulse Vestige and Vanille recovers her weapon. After looking around a bit, they hear Snow's voice. When they realize that he is coming their way, they decide to run away (one of Vanille's philosophies when things are rough). As they do so, however, they encounter Cie'th and are forced to fight.
During one fight in particular, Snow finds them and lends them a hand. He then explains why he is searching for Serah and what she means to him. Vanille doesn't offer her opinion, but Hope finds the entire display disgusting. But they don't have a choice: they have to work together.
Finally, the trio find Serah. She is unconscious and, upon seeing her, Vanille keeps her distance (mainly due to her shock). Her odd behavior isn't noticed (or perhaps it is written off as her being disgusted by the l'Cie) because Lightning and Sazh choose that moment to arrive. After Serah passes on her Focus to them (i.e. that they need to protect Cocoon), she turns into a crystal.
Snow and Lightning in particular are heart-broken by the change and they decide to attack the fal'Cie Anima. When said Anima awakens, she brands Lightning, Snow, Hope and Sazh as l'Cie and drops them onto Lake Bresha. As soon as the party discovers their brands, Vanille pretends that she was marked at the same time too.
Right after this (albeit awkward) moment, Vanille lets her companions come up with what they think the Focus means. She is afraid to offer too much information because of her past. Besides, if she wants to keep up the ruse of being branded along with them, she can't reveal how much she knows.
Without her help, the group decide that their Focus is to destroy Cocoon through the use of Ragnarok; though they're not sure how to go about fulfilling that goal. Snow fights against the vision (because Serah had told them that they must save Cocoon) and, so, the group splits up. Vanille ends up following Lightning, Sazh and Hope, but she is the one that finds the abandon Sanctum ship. They board it and listen to a news announcement, which informs them that the Purge went as planned and that there might be more Purges in the future.
They don't have much time to digest that lie before their ship is caught under heavy fire. Though they did their best to maneuver away from the enemy, they end up crash landing in the Vile Peaks. (This is the moment where Vanille will enter the game if accepted.)
Sample First Person Journal post: (At least 7 sentences!)
[At first, there is silence. And, then, a soft groan becomes audible.]
...wh-where...wh-where am I? [The voice is noticeably female and there is a slight accent to it.] Hope? Sazh? Lightning?
[She shifts, possibly getting to her feet.]
What kind of place is this? I've never seen anythin' like this before. [Her voice gains some strength.] It says it's recording, but... Can anyone hear me? My name is Vanille.
Sample Third Person post: (At least three five-sentence paragraphs, please!)
"Nn my head..." Vanille mumbled, brushing a strand of fiery hair out of her eyes. Blinking several times, she cleared her blurry vision and glanced around.
"This isn't Lake Breshna." she frowned and pivoted herself onto her knees, "Hope? Lightning? Sazh? ...Snow?" she bit her lip worriedly when she received no response, "I guess I'm on my own."
As she stood up, she bumped into a strange device. Gasping, Vanille pushed it around with the toe of her boot before, finally, picking it up. Almost immediately, it turned on and began recording.
"Well that was easy." she smiled at her small bit of luck, "Hello! I'm Vanille. Can anyone hear me?" she even waved at the screen for added effect, "I don't know where I am or...why I've been brought here. Can anyone fill me in?" she tilted her head curiously.
Looking away from the screen momentarily as she waited for a response, the girl walked over to a nearby bed and sat down. Crossing her legs, she hummed to herself and kept herself entertained by imagining Sazh's face when he arrived.
"He won't know what to do!" she giggled, muffling the sound behind her hand, "I better be ready to help him."
Even though, technically, Sazh saw her as a kid. Vanille preferred it that way, though. If any of them figured out how old she really was, they might drive her away or consider her the enemy.
I guess I kind of am...
A long time ago, she had had a chance to destroy Cocoon - and thus end the war. But she had been too scared to do it. Now she was faced with the consequences of her inaction.
They would be mad... I can't tell them.
Shaking her head, Vanille returned her attention to her communicator. No matter what, she would keep her secrets. That was the way it had to be. At least until she found Fang (or Fang found her). Then they could decide together...if Fang remembered.
Part of Vanille hoped she didn't.
